After a one-year hiatus, The Open Championship is back with a bumper prize pot to boot.

Not only will the winner take home the Claret Jug, they’ll also receive a cheque for a mega sum of money.

New to Paddy Power?

While different sporting bodies’ finances have taken a battering due to coronavirus, the R&A have hiked up the cash on offer from the last Open Championship held back in 2019.

When Shane Lowry shot a 15-under-par at Royal Portrush two years ago the Paddy Power ambassador took home $1.935m from the $10.5m kitty.

As the financial arms race among the majors continues, the R&A have managed to find some spare change down the sofa and bumped up the pot to $11.5m for this year’s tournament.

And whoever comes out on top at Royal St. George’s in the coming days can expect to walk away with a cool $2.070m.

The drinks would definitely be on Clara-native Shane if he can become the first player since Padraig Harrington in 2008 to retain the Claret Jug.

Even if you don’t win there’s plenty of cash to be had with the top 70 all earning a slice of that sweet, sweet pie. The runner-up nets $1.198m while a top-23 finish guarantees at least €100,000. The sliding scale of pay goes down to $26,500 for 70th place.

You may be thinking these are ridiculous sums for hitting a tiny ball around but The Open Championship offers the joint-lowest prize money of all the majors.

Also, what’s with it all being in US dollars? Well, the R&A made the change back in 2017 because it’s the most common currency at the highest levels of golf.

Who will walk away with the winner’s share of the prize money? We’ll find out on Sunday and you can have a gander at Paddy Power’s latest odds for the 2021 Open Championship by visiting paddypower.com/golf/open-championship-2021.
