Paddy’s guide to the biggest sporting events this July

Huge month of sport tbf

Football might be finished (for a couple of weeks, anyway) but there’s still more sport than you can shake a proverbial 3-wood at over the next few weeks, starting with the British Open at Sandwich.

Here’s Paddy’s guide to the biggest sporting events on the horizon…

The Open Championship

15th to 18th July

The world’s best golfers are set to descend on Sandwich, England for the 149th Open Championship. and Paddy’s paying 12 PLACES on each-way bets this year – thank you very much!

Last year’s tournament was cancelled due to that coronavirus thing so Paddy Power ambassador Shane Lowry is the defending champion having got his hands on the Claret Jug back in 2019.

It’s Rory McIlroy’s last chance of the year to end his major championship drought and the County Down native is the second-favourite with Paddy Power to come out on top at Royal St George’s.

While Jon Rahm is hoping to follow up last month’s US Open success and the Spaniard leads the betting ahead of next Thursday’s tee off.

British and Irish Lions v South Africa

24th July, 31st July and 7th August

Britain and Ireland’s combined rugby talent take on the might of World Cup winners South Africa in a three-test series.

Expect fireworks as the Lions’ last tour of the Southern Hemisphere in 2017 went down to the wire and ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw with New Zealand.

Paddy’s traders can barely split the two teams so if drama is what you’re after in the coming weeks then the Lions tour is a must.

Scottish Premiership

Starts July 31st

If you live and breathe club football then you’re in luck as the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership gets underway at the end of the month. Rangers kick off the campaign – and their title defence – at home to Livingston while Celtic’s new boss Ange Postecoglou faces a tricky trip to newly-promoted Hearts.

Postecoglou has a big job on his hands to revitalise Celtic and the Bhoys are just over evens to wrestle the trophy back from odds-on favourites Rangers.

Goodwood

Galway Racing Festival

26th July to 1st August

Goodwood Festival

27th July to 31st July

There are big horse racing meetings on either side of the Irish Sea to round off July’s sporting action.

The week-long Galway Racing Festival boasts 53 races over timber including the world-famous Galway Plate, set to feature the enigmatic dual Cheltenham Festival winner Samcro.

At the same time, the Flat superstars descend on Goodwood for five days of high-class action. Royal Ascot winners Poetic Flare and Palace Pier are set to finally meet on track – and Paddy’s top trader Frank Hickey is backing Jim Bolger’s colt to get the better of his one-mile rival in the Sussex Stakes.

You can have a punt on all the races and catch the action live in Paddy Power stores or online.
