Collin Morikawa was a very good eighth last week at the PGA Championship and the only thing that stopped him finishing higher was his putting.
He put in an excellent tee to green performance and was ranked third in Shots Gained Off the Tee and seventh in Shots Gained Approach.
He was beaten in a playoff in this event last year on his debut and the reason this course looks to suit him so much is that precision is more important than power. Morikawa is one of the more accurate drivers on the Tour and his iron play is possibly the best in the world.
Another reason is that he performs best on bentgrass greens and these are bentgrass greens at Colonial this week. He can go one better this year and become champion.
Like Morikawa, Corey Conners put up a really good performance last week at the PGA Championship. He ranked out ninth in Shots Gained off the Tee and 16th in Approach.
He is another who will like the precision test this week. He has had three appearances at Colonial and his form figures read 8-31-19, so he is already showing a liking to the course. He’s the biggest danger to Morikawa.
Russell Knox has been in decent form recently. His last three starts have yielded finishes of 21-18-39.
He is another player who should be suited to the test of Colonial. He has made five appearances and has finished in the top 25 in four of them. I thought he was one who could go well at a bigger price.
C.T. Pan was 18th last time out at the Wells Fargo and that was a good performance given the course wouldn’t really have suited him.
He’s now coming to a set-up that should play to his strengths. He has made four appearances here and was 20th in 2018 and third in 2019. He’s a big price and should outplay those odds.
