A year ago Russell Henley was in the doldrums and was struggling to keep his card but he’s had a great six months since golf returned from lockdown. He had an 11th place finish in the Sony Open last week but his putter was really lukewarm and that stopped him from challenging for the win.
This is going to be birdie fest here so you’re going to need really strong iron play. His putter needs to warm up too, but strong iron play will be key. I think he’s been threatening to win for the last nine months and I think it can come this week at the American Express.
Sam Burns has good course form here but he hasn’t played competitively since the Huston Open in November. He was well placed to win the event but a final round 72 dropped him down to 7th place.
What caught my eye was that it was a pretty high-class field for the event with a large proportion of the field prepping for The Masters the following week. This is a drop down in class to a slightly lesser field this week and if he can repeat his form here he can put up a really, really strong performance.
I think Doc Redman is going to have a really big 2021. He’s had a 4th at the Bermuda Championship and a 3rd at the Safeway Open with the latter taking place in California – the same State as the American Express this week.
Players tend to have a liking for the same States, whether it’s the weather or how the courses play, and that seems to be the case for Redman. I’m willing to take a chance on him at the prices this week.
Keegan Bradley missed the cut last week but that doesn’t tell the whole story about how he played. His green game was really, really impressive but his putting was abysmal and he can just write that off completely.
He’s suffered from the ban on the anchor putter but with the prices that are on offer I’m happy to take a chance on a player that can improve. Putting can be so variable so basically we’re betting on some good fortune change on the greens for him.
Charley Hoffman has been relatively quiet over the last 12 to 18 months but his 14th placed finish last week was really good. We know how good a player he is and he’s probably looking to get into The Masters.
I think he’ll put up a really good showing this week and I’m confident that he’ll outplay his big odds.
Chez Reavie just had a poor week last week. I was encouraged by his overall tee to green game and looking into his form here he’s had five appearances with three top 30 finishes.
He has a liking for the course and at close to three figures, he’s a high class player and can go well here.
