Shane Lowry will be enjoying a gaggle of Guinness tonight after showing some serious bottle to win his first title since the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational almost four years ago.
The Offaly man sat in pole position going into the final round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, leading by three shots. Instead of treating us to a nice relaxing enjoyable victory he woke up today and said ‘F*ck it, I’m going to give everyone watching back home heart palpitations for four hours before I clinch it on the last.’ And that’s exactly what he did. You little divil Shane.
Richard Sterne was the man breathing down his neck on the leaderboard on the final day and the South African flew out of the blocks. He played the first nine holes in 31 while Lowry carded a 37, leaving Sterne the one now three shots ahead.
But the tide began to turn on the 12th when Lowry bagged a birdie on the par three before holding a 20 footer at the 13th. Coming off the 16th green the lead was shared and on the 18th par five, after Sterne made a hames of his second, and with the world watching, Lowry stepped up and unleashed this beaut:
281 yards. Tournament on the line.

Well done Shane. A four-time European Tour winner now. Even President Higgins was up watching and threw you a congratulations. I wonder does he get the full sports package in Aras an Uachtarain or does he go over to his mates to watch the BT games?
