Rory McIlroy’s first round rollercoaster at Royal Birkdale has left him odds-on to make the cut (1/4), despite a disastrous first few holes which looked like ending his tournament prematurely.
The four-time Major Champion is now 5/2 to miss the cut with Paddy Power, after being saved by a pep-talk from caddie JP Fitzgerald.
Though such intervention may not go down as well today – the bookie offering odds of 500/1 that the two are caught on camera having a shoving match today.
Jon Rahm was caught up in another rules controversy, escaping penalty for the second time in two events. It’s 33/1 that he’s third time unlucky and gets penalised today.
The last time the Spaniard had a punishment waived, he went on to win, at the Irish Open. He’s 25/1 to do the same at The Open.
Joint-leader Jordan Spieth is the favourite to win The Open (4/1), with McIlroy priced at 28/1.
Spokesman Paddy Power said: “McIlroy Ror-ed up the leaderboard after a horrible front nine, but he can’t afford the same start again today.
“While there’s only so long Jon Rahm can ride his luck with the officials. Surely it won’t be long before we see the silencing of the Rahm.”
