Earlier this week, Paddy Power sat down with three legends of the sport to get their views on this Sunday’s All-Ireland Final between Kerry and Dublin. Joining Paddy were Pat Spillane (8-time All Ireland winner with Kerry), Charlie Redmond (3-time All Star) & Matty Forde (Former Footballer of the Year).

Kerry v Dublin

Pat Spillane – Kerry to Win by 1-3 points
1985 was the last time Kerry beat Dublin in an All-Ireland final, that’s a lot of hurt for the people of Kerry. In last year’s semi final against Dublin, if they’d lost it would’ve been the sixth loss in-a-row to Dublin. This is a proper sporting rivalry and if you can beat the Dubs and land the All-Ireland it’s an extra bonus.
The big question for Dublin is who is going to take on David Clifford? A gunslinger is only as good as his bullets, so if he doesn’t get the ball, he can’t score much. The key is cutting off the supply because there’s nobody in this country who can mark him one-to-one.
I couldn’t see Kerry being beaten last year at all and then the final, in the last four minutes it was level. They were poor and they were nervous. This year, it’s going to be a very close game. Winning last year, Kerry got that monkey off their back of winning an All-Ireland and also, beating the Dubs in the semi final. Their game management, their confidence is much better this year.
The second reason is, defence. It was Kerry’s defence last year that won them the All-Ireland and Kerry’s defence is still very, very good. They’ve only conceded one goal in this year’s Championship, they’re very well organised.
And then, there’s a certain David Clifford. I’m going with Kerry to Win by 1-3 points.
Charlie Redmond – Dublin to Win
For Dublin to beat Kerry or Kerry to beat Dublin in an All-Ireland Final is extra special. On Sunday we have two great teams against each other and neither side have hit their high mark this season yet. If both of them do come out and play as well as they can play we’re in for an absolute classic.
I see Dublin coming out on Sunday and they’ll explode into this game. For all the greatness they have, they’ve not been in the last two All-Ireland Finals so a lot of the lads are coming into this and it might be their last hurrah and the last time they wear the Dublin shirt in Croke Park.
On Sunday we might see the end of the careers of three or four Dublin players but I think you’ll see them walking across the park with a Celtic Cross medal in their back pocket.
The rest of the team want to have those lads with eight All-Irelands winning a ninth. I think both teams will go flying into this game. It’s going to be hell for leather. Everything is on the line here on Sunday, but the Dubs will do it.
Matty Forde – Dublin to Win by 1-3 points
The history of Kerry v Dublin is something special, they’ve 68 All-Irelands between them, the rest of Ireland has 67 and it’s going to increase by one over the weekend. I was brought up watching videos of the great Kerry and Dublin teams of the 1970s and 80s and that’s where I first fell in love with football.
David Clifford carries this Kerry team and he certainly carried them on his back in the semi final. If he’s held quiet by Dublin it’ll be a huge advantage for the Dubs.
The midfield match-up is going to be interesting, it’s very much 50-50 for me. There’s going to be a lot of bodies around the centre of midfield. For Dublin’s full forward line too, it’s going to be about Kerry slowing down or, at least, limiting the amount of ball they see. David Clifford is going to do damage if and when he gets the ball and it’s all about limiting how much he gets from a Dublin point of view.
Charlie and Pat both make a good case for their teams but the Kerry bench hasn’t produced enough over the season for me. We’ve seen it many times this year, a team has a three or four point lead going into the last ten minutes and they go into their shells.
Then the team with momentum goes on and wins it.
Dublin’s bench has proven to be the difference in many games this season. A draw isn’t out of the equation here – just look at the odds – but I’m coming down on the side of Dublin. I tipped them before the round robin started.
If David Clifford is held in check there’s going to be too much slack for the rest of the Kerry team to make up. Dublin have more match winners so I’m backing them to take it by a point.
