The Wexford legend reckons there'll be a few close calls on Saturday and the best bets may come in the handicap markets.

Offaly v Wexford

Throw-in, 4pm
Offaly -2
The odds would suggest that this one is going to be the closest of the games over the weekend. Both have seen plenty of each other over the last few years and played in the Championship and in the Tailteann Cup last year. It was one win each last year but Offaly were pretty depleted when they came to Wexford Park in the Leinster Championship and lost.

They returned with a different team in the Tailteann Cup and won reasonably convincingly later in the year. They took a big beating off Cavan last weekend but they were pretty much guaranteed second place in the group at that stage. They were able to rest a couple of guys and did have a couple sent off too who are now obviously missing for this clash.

I expect a reaction from Offaly.

Wexford had a good win last weekend, beating Leitrim by six points in Parnell Park. Offaly at home have been pretty tricky customers with the exception of the Cavan game. If it’s the case that they’re back to full strength again, then that rest last week will stand to them.

They should be able to cover the two-point handicap.

Carlow v New York

Throw-in, 5pm
New York +7

This is the ideal draw for Carlow. No disrespect to the visitors, but it’s been a long time since they hit the heights of a Connacht semi final against Sligo.

Carlow fully deserved their second-place finish in their group with a couple of good wins. I fancy  Carlow to win as New York have been moderate for so long now, but I’m not sure they can cover the handicap. If they were facing Leitrim for example, the handicap wouldn’t be +7 for sure. We know what happened when Leitrim faced New York, so New York look the play in the handicap market.

Fermanagh v Laois

Throw-in, 6pm
Fermanagh -4
Fermanagh were beaten by Antrim last weekend, who have proven to be very good in this group so far. However, there’s only going to be one winner with Fermanagh at home to Laois.

The visitors struggled to a draw with London last weekend which got them through. Fermanagh playing at home against them with a -4 handicap looks like a pretty decent pick to me.

Down v Longford

Throw-in, 7pm
Longford +6
I’d expect Down to bounce back after their loss to Meath at the weekend and they might even rest a few players, knowing that, at worst, they are going to finish second in the group. Longford have bounced back reasonably well from a tough defeat early in Leinster and have gotten a couple of good results under their belt in the Tailteann Cup.

You would fancy Down at home though. The handicap is at +6 points and I’m not so sure that Down would cover that. Longford have been tricky enough customers in the competition so far. I’d reckon we’ll see a home win – but I’d take Longford on the handicap.
