Cavan may have home advantage for this and are slight favourites with Paddy’s traders, but I would have Derry frontrunners to win this if I was setting the odds. Derry put up a huge score last weekend as they trounced Fermanagh by 19 points, and they also scored 21 points on their first day out against Longford in a 16-point victory. There is no doubt Rory Gallagher’s men are on the roll.
The home side were slow out of the blocks after drawing with Fermanagh in their opening fixture and they really need to win this to have a shot of promotion to Division 2 next season. But, Derry are a team on the up and this is an away win in my book. Don’t be surprised if Derry run up another huge points tally again too!
Donegal are coming into this game without the services of their best player Michael Murphy, who is missing again through injury. They struggled badly at home to Monaghan without him last week and shipped four goals in the game. Their defence was very poor that night it has to be said.
All of the sides in Division One North will be putting out full strength squads this weekend with promotion/relegation issues still to be sorted, and Armagh certainly have a big chance in this match. Kieran McGeeney’s side were beaten at home by Tyrone last Saturday, but they played quite well and I was impressed by Rian O’Neill and Jarlath Óg Burns in particular. I fancy The Orchard County to bring in the handicap on offer here.
