Paddy Power refunds over €600,000 in All-Ireland final bets as Dublin and Mayo head for replay

Punters can use the money on taxis as Dublin Bus drivers are planning strike action on the day of the replay

Paddy Power has refunded losing match bets as a free bet to All-Ireland final punters following yesterday’s drawn game between Dublin and Mayo.

The refund will cost the bookie over €600,000, and will be applied to all bets relating to the match betting, winning margin, wincast and goalcast markets.

Dublin and Mayo played out an enthralling 2-09 to 0-15 draw at a soggy Croke Park and fans of the Westerners have classy captain Cillian O’Connor to thank for earning them a draw.

His 77th minute wonder-point handing the GAA a lucrative replay on Saturday, October 1 and we decided if the GAA get another pay day then so should our loyal customers.

Continuing curse

Mayo were excellent on the day, capitalising on a misfiring Dublin attack and turning them over in defence regularly.

However, their fans will have believed the so-called Mayo ‘curse’ was real after watching their side conceded an unprecedented two own goals in an All-Ireland final.

They battled to the end for a draw however and now have another shot to end the jinx, which stretches back to 1951, against the Dubs on Saturday week.

Supporters of the Boys in Blue will argue they can’t be as poor the second time around and our traders agree, making the Dubs strong favourites in the replay.

So with over €600,000 in free bets being returned to customers, GAA fans can use the extra dough to cover the cost of taxis with the Dublin Bus strike scheduled for the day of the replay.

Replay returns

Paddy Power, a spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “That final will go down in history as one of the maddest ever and both sets of punters will have reason to be frustrated.

“Mayo backers will feel as though their side let the win slip away, while those who showed faith in the Dubs will be left disappointed by The Boys in Blue’s performance.

“Therefore we believe that the only fair thing to do is to give them back their hard earned to allow them to have a free crack at us for the replay.”

With the replay scheduled for two weeks’ time Paddy Power make the Dubs their favourites, with Mayo available at to end their 65-year hoodoo.
