The Singapore Grand Prix represents the start of a three-race swing in Asia for the Formula 1 circus as Max Verstappen and Red Bull bid to continue their record-breaking winning streaks.

After the high speed Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where Verstappen and team-mate Sergio Perez eventually pulled clear of Ferrari’s challenge, Singapore represents a different sort of challenge for the drivers as the race takes place under the lights at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

It looks set to be one of the best remaining chances for the other teams to end Red Bull’s hopes of completing an unbeaten season and the potential for a wet weekend should add some drama to proceedings. Let’s not forget there was a spate of retirements after a thunderstorm delayed last year’s race…

I’ve run the rule over Paddy Power’s betting for the Singapore Grand Prix 2023 and picked out a few best bets for this weekend’s big race. Let’s get in gear and take a look!

Singapore Grand Prix
Qualifying: Saturday 2pm
Race: Sunday 1pm

Sergio Perez's Red Bull

Outright Betting – Sergio Perez (E/W)

Max Verstappen’s record-breaking winning streak has to come to an end at some point, right? The Dutchman has a poor record in Singapore so I’m going to take an each-way chance on his team-mate, Sergio Perez.

The Red Bull number two seems to have rediscovered his mojo, to a certain extent, with three podiums in the last four races and he should head to Southeast Asia in confident mood after a superb drive to take the chequered flag in last year’s renewal.

It was one of the weekends that cemented Perez’s status as the ‘King of the Streets’ and the nature of the track will play to his strengths once again.

Red Bull bigwig Helmut Marko’s offensive comments about Perez after the Italian Grand Prix – for which he has since apologised – could also serve as fuel to light his fire.

Qualifying Winning Car – Mercedes

While Max Verstappen is predicting that Red Bull will not have their strongest weekend, Mercedes are bullish about their chances.

A look through the previous results of the 2023 campaign shows that the Silver Arrows’ W14 performs better at high downforce tracks and I fancy one of their drivers to grab pole position on Saturday.

Lewis Hamilton secured first place on the grid in July’s Hungarian Grand Prix – a high downforce track – and the seven-time world champion has a superb qualification record at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, with four poles to his name.

Meanwhile, Mercedes team-mate George Russell was known as ‘Mr Saturday’ for his exploits at former team Williams and he has the talent to put it all together over one lap to be in the mix to grab his first pole of the season.

Top 6 Finish – Lando Norris & Oscar Piastri

McLaren are another team that I expect to have a good weekend in Singapore after a few difficult races, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri challenging for a decent haul of points.

The upgraded MCL60 has climbed the pecking order since the street circuits in the early rounds of the campaign and the Hungarian Grand Prix – which looks like being a yard stick for this – showed that both cars are capable of finishing in the top six.

Last year’s Singapore Grand Prix also proved to be one of McLaren’s best in 2022, with Norris and former driver Daniel Ricciardo placing fourth and fifth respectively.

It does depend on Ferrari having a poor weekend, which could be on the cards as the SF-23 has generally performed better at power tracks this year.
