After the excitement of the Dutch Grand Prix, where multiple bursts of rain shook up the racing order and someone other than Max Verstappen briefly led the pack, the Formula 1 roadshow is heading to the iconic circuit at Monza for the Italian Grand Prix.

It is a race that has thrown up some surprise winners in recent years, including Daniel Ricciardo for McLaren in 2021 and Pierre Gasly for AlphaTauri in 2020, but it would take a brave man to bet against Verstappen cruising to a record-breaking 10th victory in a row this weekend.

Monza is one of Red Bull’s least-successful tracks on the calendar as the team have only won the Italian Grand Prix on three occasions, but the high-speed circuit should play to the all-conquering RB-19’s strengths.

I’ve had a look through Paddy Power’s odds for the Italian Grand Prix and picked out a few best bets so strap in and let’s get into gear!

Italian Grand Prix
Qualifying: Saturday 3pm
Race: Sunday 2pm
TV: Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports F1

Max Verstappen

#WhatOddsPaddy – Max Verstappen to Win the Race & Sergio Perez to Finish on the Podium

As I said, Red Bull should dominate at Monza because of the RB-19’s straight-line speed. It is the best car on the grid and the Dutch Grand Prix provided little evidence that the other teams had closed the gap after the summer break.

Max Verstappen looks unstoppable and with the all-time record of consecutive race victories within reach, the Dutchman is strongly fancied to make it 10 in a row and take the chequered flag for the 12th time this season.

Any potential underperformance or issues in qualifying is unlikely to stop the 25-year-old as he cruised from seventh on the grid to first in last year’s race, which ended under a controversial safety car.

Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez was fourth in the Netherlands last weekend, although a slow pit stop and five-second penalty cost the Mexican a place on the podium. It was a drive that continued his relative return to form and he should be able to secure a top-three finish this weekend.

Points Finish – George Russell, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly

I’ve had a little look further down the order and picked out three drivers for a Points Finish acca.

It has been a frustrating year for George Russell, with just one podium on the board, although the Mercedes driver has secured points in 77 per cent of this season’s races. He also has a decent record at Monza having finished ninth for Williams in 2021 and third for Mercedes last term.

Alex Albon is having a cracking campaign for Williams and is making a real case for a seat with one of the top teams. The long straights and high-speed corners should suit the FW45, which makes Albon decent value to bag some points for this fifth time this year.

Pierre Gasly has fond memories of Monza having won a thrilling renewal of the Italian Grand Prix in 2021. The Alpine driver also heads into the race in fine fettle after stepping on the podium in the Netherlands last weekend.

Not To Be Classified – Kevin Magnussen

The Italian Grand Prix has seen four retirements in each of the last three editions, as well as three in 2019, with mechanical issues being responsible for the bulk of those non-finishers.

Kevin Magnussen was responsible for two of those having failed to complete in 2019 (hydraulics) and 2020 (power unit) so Monza is far from a happy hunting ground for the Haas driver.

Haas have only suffered two retirements this season – Niko Hülkenberg in Austria and Magnussen in Great Britain – but both were mechanical-related issues so I’m taking a swing at the Dane completing an unwanted hat-trick.
