He’s back! Daniel Ricciardo was off the grid for the less than a year but everyone’s favourite driver makes his long-awaited return at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix after AlphaTauri’s brutal sacking of Nyck de Vries.
The bad news for the Honey Badger is that he’s jumping into the worst car on the grid so a points finish is probably out of the question, although a repeat of the crazy race at the Hungaroring in 2021 would certainly boost his chances.
Danny Ric’s return is not the only talking point of the weekend as F1 bigwigs have made a change to qualifying with teams being restricted to hard tyres in Q1, mediums in Q2 and the soft compound in Q3, which has the potential to mix things up on Saturday.
Max Verstappen continued his complete and utter domination of the 2023 season by making it six wins on the spin when we last went racing and it seems like only mechanical problems can stop the Red Bull superstar at this point.
The pressure is mounting on a few drivers, including Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez, as we approach the summer break so it looks set to be a crucial weekend up and down the grid.
I’ve had a look through Paddy Power’s Hungarian Grand Prix odds and picked out a couple of best bets. Let’s get to the picks…
Hungarian Grand Prix Qualifying: Saturday 3pm Race: Sunday 2pm TV: Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports F1
Podium Finish – Lewis Hamilton
Mercedes moved back in the right direction at Silverstone as Lewis Hamilton bagged third place to make it three podium finishes from four races – and I’m backing the Brit to make it four from five.
The seven-time world champion is the most successful driver in the history of the Hungarian Grand Prix, with an incredible eight wins at the Hungaroring on his CV, and his experience should come in handy with the weather potentially changing over the course of the weekend.
The Silver Arrows are also confident their most recent upgrade to the front wing will shine around the circuit’s low-speed corners.
Meanwhile, Sergio Perez’s poor qualifying performances have been leaving him with too much to do on a Sunday to secure podium – and another disappointing Saturday for the Red Bull number two should aid Hamilton’s chances to sneaking into the top three.
Top 6 Finish – Fernando Alonso, Lando Norris & Oscar Piastri
It looks set to be a competitive weekend behind Max Verstappen but I’m going to take a chance on a three-fold acca using Paddy Power’s Top 6 Finish betting market.
Aston Martin have lost their status as having the second-best car on the grid and Fernando Alonso comes into this off the back of his worst weekend of the season, but I fancy the Spaniard to bounce back as he has finished in the top five on 10 previous occasions at the Hungaroring and his car should be more suited to this track than Silverstone.
The British Grand Prix was one of McLaren’s best weekends in a long time as the upgraded MCL60 took a major step forward and Lando Norris delivered a mature performance to finish second. There is no reason to think that was a fluke and he should be challenging at the top end once again.
An untimely safety car denied OscarPiastri a third-place finish at Silverstone but the Aussie’s drive was most impressive and a repeat should have him in the mix to score some decent points.
