The Formula 1 roadshow makes its way to Britain for the oldest race on the calendar and to take in one of the most iconic tracks on the planet… Silverstone!
Red Bull are bidding to continue their unbeaten start to the season and make it 11 race wins on the spin, while Max Verstappen is looking to take the chequered flag in the British Grand Prix for the first time in his career.
Ferrari ace Carlos Sainz was the first home in last year’s thriller at Silverstone, which was overshadowed by Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu’s dramatic crash at the first corner.
The home fans will have plenty of British stars to cheer including McLaren’s main man Lando Norris and Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who will both be hoping to bounce back from last weekend’s nightmare in Austria.
The latest British Grand Prix odds are on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app. I’ve picked out a couple of best bets for the weekend so it’s lights out and away we go…
British Grand Prix Qualifying: Saturday 3pm Race: Sunday 3pm TV: Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports F1/Channel 4
Qualifying Winning Car – Ferrari
I’m taking a chance on a bit of a flyer to kick things off.
You have to go all the way back to April for the last time a Red Bull failed to come out on top in qualifying – Charles Leclerc in Azerbaijan – but this could prove to be one of the more challenging Saturdays for Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
Sure, the RB19 is the best car on the grid *but* Verstappen has never been on pole position in nine races at Silverstone – including the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix – while Perez’s best qualifying result at the track was last season’s fourth place.
An upgraded floor and front wing helped Ferrari take a decent-sized step back in the right direction in last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, and their pace over one-lap was encouraging as Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz filled second and third on the grid behind Verstappen.
Sainz took pole in last year’s British Grand Prix while Leclerc qualified third so, when you consider that the Prancing Horse are bringing more upgrades for this race, both cars should be in the mix by the end of Q3.
#WhatOddsPaddy – Max Verstappen to Win the Race & Carlos Sainz to Finish on the Podium
He took the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix chequered flag but victory in the British Grand Prix has eluded Verstappen to date, although he will more than likely be stepping foot on top of the podium on Sunday.
The Dutchman is in sensational form, winning the last five races, but his price in the Outright Betting market is too skinny so I’ve beefed things up with a #WhatOddsPaddy punt.
Ferrari looked the best of the rest in Austria and if their upgrades continue to improve the SF-23 then they should be in contention to challenge for podium positions, especially if Perez struggles in qualification and Mercedes’ latest package fails to bring about a big improvement.
Sainz ran into a number of problems over the course of last weekend in Austria but still showed plenty of pace, and being demoted to sixth after post-race penalties were applied should serve as motivation for Silverstone.
The 28-year-old delivered a mature performance in last year’s British Grand Prix to claim his maiden Formula 1 victory and I fancy him to finish on the podium for the first time this season.
Points Finish Acca – Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, Esteban Ocon & Lance Stroll
Paddy’s celebrating the British Grand Prix by offering a free bet to customers who place a Same Podium Multi on the race – and that man Sainz forms the first leg of my four-fold Points Finish Acca.
Lando Norris drove the nuts off his upgraded McLaren in Austria and, while the MCL60 is unlikely to be as well suited to Silverstone, he has scored points in four of his five F1 starts at the track.
Esteban Ocon is having a rollercoaster season and his run of top-10 finishes was snapped when collecting a record number of penalties in Austria. Alpine should bounce back from last weekend’s disappointing performance and the French driver has a superb record at Silverstone.
Both Aston Martins should comfortably finish in the top 10 and Lance Stroll is a better price than Fernando Alonso to achieve that. Sure, the Canadian has a mixed record at Silverstone but he has plenty of experience round the circuit.
