It’s the most prestigious race of the year and the hype is building more than normal for Monaco after last weekend’s Grand Prix at Imola was cancelled because of flooding in the Emilia-Romagna region.

The glitz and the glamour of the street circuit makes the Monaco Grand Prix the one they all want to win, but *whisper this quietly* it normally provides one of the least exciting Sundays on the calendar.

A real lack of overtaking opportunities due to the tight track means Saturday’s qualifying session is ridiculously important and a failure to get on the front row normally ends a driver’s hopes of taking the chequered flag.

‘King of the Streets’ Sergio Perez actually won last year’s race from third on the grid, although the Red Bull driver had strategy on his side and a Ferrari pit-stop blunder when double-stacking Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc to thank for his victory.

Red Bull have been utterly dominant this season, winning all five races, but Monaco provides a chance for the other nine teams to close the gap as there are plenty of low-speed corners and just one DRS zone.

Quite frankly, this has the potential to be one of the most unpredictable weekends of the 2023 Formula 1 season so I’ve had a look at Paddy Power’s odds for the Monaco Grand Prix and picked out a couple of fancies. Let’s get to the bets…

Monaco Grand Prix
Qualifying: Saturday 3pm
Race: Sunday 2pm
TV: Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports F1

Overall Qualification Winner – Charles Leclerc

Poor old Charles Leclerc. He just wants to win his home race but someone, somewhere has cursed him.

A driveshaft issue prevented the Monegasque from taking up his slot on pole in 2021, he then crashed Niki Lauda’s 1974 Ferrari in a demonstration display and, to cap things off, some strange strategy shouts from the pit wall wrecked his chances in last year’s race after starting first on the grid.

Ferrari are enduring a trickier campaign than expected, but their pace over one lap remains impressive and they could have enough in the tank to be the team to bring the challenge to Red Bull this weekend.

Leclerc knows the track layout like the back of his hand and, if you’re willing to put a line through his disappointing weekend in Miami, the Ferrari man is certainly worth taking a chance on being the Overall Qualification Winner.

Outright Betting – Charles Leclerc (E/W)

Yes, you’ve read that correctly, Charles Leclerc is finally going to win his home Grand Prix. I’ve put it out into the universe, it’s happening.

It has been a while since the 25-year-old took the chequered flag – July 2022 in Austria, to be precise – but, as one of the most talented drivers on the grid, he’s due a massive change in luck.

As previously mentioned, the sheer number of low-speed corners around the streets of Monaco is unlikely to play to Red Bull’s strengths so this is, arguably, the best opportunity for a different team to claim victory.

Despite appearing to make no progress from last season’s car, the SF-23 should take to this track and if Leclerc nabs pole position as predicted then he should be able to convert that into a positive result. At the prices, it’s worth taking the each-way option just in case the Ferrari strategists do their worst again…
