Max Verstappen can lift his second Formula 1 drivers’ title at the second time of asking this weekend.

After failing to seal the deal in Singapore last time out, the Red Bull ace heads into the Japanese Grand Prix with a 112-point lead over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in the standings.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

Red Bull buddy Sergio Perez is the only other driver in mathematical contention after a cracking performance to win the Singapore GP but he’s a further two points behind.

As long as Verstappen outscores Leclerc by eight points and Perez by six in Japan then he’ll be celebrating back-to-back drivers’ titles… so what are the permutations?

Max Verstappen will win the drivers’ championship at the Japanese GP if…

  • He wins the race with the fastest lap
  • He wins the race and Leclerc finishes third or lower
  • He finishes second, Leclerc finishes fifth or lower without the fastest lap and Perez finishes four or lower without the fastest lap
  • He finishes second with the fastest lap, Leclerc finishes fifth or lower and Perez finishes four or lower
  • He finishes third, Leclerc finishes seventh or lower and Perez finishes sixth or lower
  • He finishes third with the fastest lap, Leclerc finishes sixth or lower and Perez finishes fifth or lower
  • He finishes fourth, Leclerc finishes eighth or lower without the fastest lap and Perez finishes seventh or lower without the fastest lap
  • He finishes fourth with the fastest lap, Leclerc finishes eighth or lower and Perez finishes seventh or lower
  • He finishes fifth, Leclerc finishes ninth without ninth or lower without the fastest lap and Perez finishes eighth or lower without the fastest lap
  • He finishes fifth with the fastest lap, Leclerc finishes ninth or lower and Perez finishes eighth or lower
  • He finishes sixth, Leclerc is out of the points and Perez is ninth or lower without the fastest lap
  • He finishes sixth with the fastest lap, Leclerc finishes 10th or lower and Perez finishes ninth or lower

If you want to watch the Japanese GP then you’ll have to get up early as it’s lights out at 6am on Sunday morning. Yikes.
