The 2021 F1 Drivers’ Championship has been one for the ages. Max Verstappen has given everything, and sometimes a little too much, to end Lewis Hamilton’s stranglehold on the sport.
The pair have taken each other out along the way and it almost happened again when Hamilton’s Mercedes went into the back of the Red Bull during a crazy final few laps of the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix last weekend. The pair are tied on 369.5 points heading into the decider at a newly-tweaked track in Abu Dhabi.

With plenty of bad blood between the pair there could be all kind of fireworks at the Yas Marina Circuit – especially as Verstappen knows he will be crowned champion if both fail to finish because he’s won more races throughout the season.
Hamilton and Mercedes have come roaring back in recent weeks and, with the title maybe slipping away, will the Dutchman go nuclear? Here’s David’s two best bets for the final weekend of the 2021 F1 season.
Lewis Hamilton to win & to have the fastest lap
Verstappen won this race last season, with a Covid-recovering Hamilton only third, but that doesn’t look likely to count for much this time around. The Abu Dhabi circuit has undergone extensive changes for this year’s race, and now looks set to favour Mercedes rather than the Dutchman’s Red Bull.
Hamilton has had a run of three wins in a row to set up this thrilling final race of the season, and could continue his domination here with the track changes. Hamilton to win & to have the fastest lap would see him win the title and you pocket a few bob.
Max Verstappen Not to be classified
Verstappen is an aggressive driver at the best of times, and refuses to back out of any sticky situation out on track – and despite having the title on the line we don’t expect him to take a backward step here.
If he’s chasing Hamilton and getting desperate in a bid to overtake his rival, he’s likely to take more risks than usual to close the gap by any (legal) means possible, which could prove costly.
Max Verstappen not to be classified is an interesting price.
