There’s grudge matches, and then there’s this; Iran v USA effectively in a knockout game to see who makes it out of Group B on Tuesday night. USA have laboured to two draws while Iran got thumped by England before stunning Wales late on last time out.

This has got absolute barnburner written all over it and there’s surely no way this ends 0-0. Iran would most likely progress with a draw but I can’t see them playing for one.

We all know the tremulous events going on both in Iran and in their national team’s changing room but they harnessed that to great effect against the Welsh. It just feels like it’s written in the stars so we’ll kick off with Iran (+1) in the handicap markets.

Both Teams to Score

USA know they have to win this game and, after that snoozefest with England on Friday night, they simply have to come out and attack. They’ve shown glimpses, especially in that first half against Wales, but they’ll need more to beat a fired-up Iran.

The Iranians will be rubbing their hands together at the thought of the USA pushing forward and they’ll be hoping to hit them on the break as they did on Friday. With so much at stake I’m expecting Both Teams to Score.

Over 2.5 Goals

I think that will translate to Over 2.5 Goals as well. There have been just two goals in USA’s two matches so far, but Iran have had a whopping 10 in just two outings.

The way this game is set up leads itself towards goals and I think, after their mullering against England, Iran might be a bit scared to sit back and they might take the mentality that attack is the best form of defence. Either way, our next leg is Over 2.5 Goals.

Mehdi Taremi to Score Anytime

Mehdi Taremi already has two World Cup goals to his name so far but those were both consolation goals against England. He might have got one against Wales but selflessly squared it to Rouzbeh Cheshmi at the death to rubber stamp the win.

The Porto forward has Champions League class, something his likely USA counterpart Josh Sargent certainly does not. In addition to his two goals he’s on spot kick duty as well so Mehdi Taremi to Score Anytime feels like the best play in the goal-scorer markets.

Christian Pulisic to Score or Assist

Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic looks the man most likely to have a major impact for the US. The wide man was their brightest light on Friday night and registered four shots with one chance created as well.

On another day he might have scored against England and Tuesday could be that day. He set up Timothy Weah for the goal against Wales so he’s a genuine double threat so we’ll finish off with Pulisic to Score or Assist.
