Netherlands v Qatar

Netherlands -2

The Netherlands were far from impressive in their 1-1 draw with Ecuador on Friday, but they have probably done just about enough to secure top spot in Group A.

The Dutch are locked on four points with Ecuador, with both sides boasting the same goal difference.

The final Group A games on Tuesday could subsequently develop into a shootout between the Netherlands and Ecuador to see who takes top spot, but the Dutch hold a key advantage in the fact that they take on apparent group whipping boys Qatar in their final game, while Ecuador must navigate a difficult assignment against Senegal.

For that reason, Louis Van Gaal’s side will surely be out to score as many goals as possible on Tuesday and put their status as group winners beyond all doubt.

Ecuador raced into a two-goal lead against Qatar midway through the first half of their group opener before appearing to their foot off the pedal, while Senegal found the going somewhat tougher against the World Cup hosts but still benefited from some atrocious defending.

The Dutch should have no problems sealing a comfortable win on Tuesday.

Cody Gakpo to Score Anytime

Cody Gakpo is one of the hottest prospects in world football.

The Dutch forward has scored in each of his two games at the World Cup so far, netting the opening goal against both Senegal and Ecuador.

He has scored 12 goals in 19 appearances for PSV this season in all competitions in addition to registering 14 assists and it is easy to see why some of the biggest clubs in Europe are clamouring for his signature.

He has proved himself lethal in front of goal in each of his two appearances at the World Cup and has a very good chance of making it a clean sweep of group stage goals against a porous Qatari defence.

Ecuador v Senegal

Ecuador to Win

Ecuador have been a breath of fresh air at the World Cup so far. Under-20 Copa America champions in 2019, they are a young and talented squad that seem to really understand each other having risen through the ranks together.

Ecuador physically dominated Qatar in their opening game of the World Cup and were well worth their draw against the Netherlands on Friday.

The second coming of Enner Valencia has been a joy to watch and they now have a chance to cause what would have been a minor pre-tournament upset by dumping AFCON champions Senegal out during the group stages.

Senegal have been underwhelming in both of their games at the tournament, which is understandable given the loss of Sadio Mane. Ecuador have looked far more impressive thus far and should book their passage to the knockout stages.

Both Teams to Score? No

Ecuador do not concede a lot of goals.

They had not conceded a goal in seven games before Gakpo’s goal in the 1-1 draw with the Netherlands on Friday, and even that was an outrageous effort from outside the box that would be blazed over the bar nine times out of ten.

Senegal, on the other hand, look short of ideas up front without Mane in the side.

They never looked like scoring against the Dutch in their group opener and only broke the deadlock against Qatar because of a horrific defensive error. Their second goal came via a poorly defended corner. They will get no such gifts against Ecuador on Tuesday and it’s hard to see them breaking through such a rigid defence without Mane in their ranks.

Under 4.5 Cards

Neither Ecuador nor Senegal have been particularly dirty during the World Cup. Granted, Ecuador have been aggressive and physical, but they have only picked up three yellow cards in their two World Cup games to date, while they have only picked up 11 in their last nine matches.

Senegal, on the other hand, have received five yellow cards in their two games at the tournament but have just six cards in their last six games.

Match referee Clement Turpin, who took charge of this year’s Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid, has only brandished 34 cards in 12 games this season at a rate of under three per game.

He even keeps his cards in his pocket during high stakes games, dishing out just one booking in the Champions League final this year and four in the 120 minutes of the 2021 Europa League final. It is unlikely that there will be too many cards brandished on Tuesday.
