England kick off their World Cup campaign with a first ever clash against Iran.

The Three Lions are the hot favourites to claim all three points from the opening match in Group B, which takes place at the Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan.

Gareth Southgate’s team head into the clash in poor form, however, having been relegated from the top tier of the UEFA Nations League earlier this year.

England v Iran prediction

Mark Lawrenson: First games in major competitions are always very, very cagey. We know Carlos Queiroz well and one of the big things for me with England is that I just hope they don’t play with two holding midfielders. I really don’t get it and, certainly against teams like Iran, I don’t think there’s any need to do so.

What they have is lots of wide players like Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling, all those guys, they’ve got Jude Bellingham in the middle who has to play – this game is tailor made for him. In the last third of the pitch England have got some really, really talented players. It’s just a case of getting the mix right.

I expect England to win but I don’t think it will be a rout. I’m going to go 2-0 to England.
