WHEN: Sunday, 15th of December, 7pm
WHERE: Stamford Bridge, London
Some people associate Christmas with presents, some with family gatherings they’d rather avoid and most of us think of the mountains of food we’re going to consume across the festive period. However, something we can all agree we love about Christmas is the random kick-off times of Premier League football, with Chelsea hosting Brentford in one of two games at the ludicrous time of 7pm on a Sunday evening, it’s safe to say festive football is well and truly here. With this one being a London derby, a Bet Builder with a focus on the foul markets will hopefully provide the first gift of the Christmas period.
Sepp van Den Berg to commit 1 or more fouls
Playing out of position at right back for the past few weeks, Sepp van Den Berg has been in amongst the fouls, drawing plenty of attention for referees. The Dutchman has committed 0.83 fouls per 90 with in the Premier League this season, managing at least one in five of his last seven starts in all competitions.
Van den Berg will be up against the combination of Marc Cucurella and Jadon Sancho who have combined for 1.69 fouls drawn per 90 this season and with the pace of Mudryk and the tricky feet of Joao Felix to come off the bench, the clumsy centre back could be well out of his depth. With some of The Bees more regular full backs returning to fitness, there’s every chance he doesn’t play 90 minutes but we’re safe if he does get taken off thanks to Paddy’s Super Sub offer meaning our bet carries over to his replacement.
Cole Palmer to be fouled 2 or more times
A player who has been attracting his fair share of opposition attention is Chelsea’s top scorer Cole Palmer. Fresh off a brace including that audacious Panenka against Spurs, Palmer will be chomping at the bit to keep Chelsea in the title race that their manager insists they’re not involved in. He’s been fouled 2.42 times per 90 this season as defenders struggle to handle his casual but agile footwork, drawing at least two fouls in eight of his 15 league starts.
Brentford are the joint lowest fouling side in the division, however, Chelsea are the 5th most fouled at 12.3 per game. With Palmer their most fouled player and undoubtedly their biggest threat, he’ll be the main threat that Thomas Frank will aim to keep quiet and with him buzzing around regular offenders Norgaard and Janelt, he should be brought down a couple of times.
Fabio Carvalho to be fouled 2 or more times
Another player who’s no stranger to some rough treatment is tricky midfielder Fabio Carvalho. The Portuguese has struggled to get into the Brentford side with only three start but now looks set for a spell in Thomas Frank’s line-up after a strong performance against Newcastle. He was fouled twice in that game to take his average to 2.05 fouls won per 90 this season which is in line with his career average.
In the middle of the park, he’ll be competing with Moises Caicedo who is Chelsea’s midfield general under Enzo Maresca. The Ecuadorian has committed 2.03 fouls per 90 this season and even if he is sent out to right back again, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia who have averaged 2.88 fouls between them per 90 will be close enough to Carvalho to bring him down.
Thiago to commit 2 or more fouls
The final piece to our puzzle is for Brentford striker Thiago Rodrigues to commit two or more fouls. Like Carvalho, he’s had to wait for his chance this season but was given his first start against Newcastle last weekend. He committed just the one foul in that game but having been hooked on 73 minutes, he’s another candidate for Paddy’s Super Sub offer. For Brugge last season, he committed 2.02 fouls per 90 and so is clearly keen to put himself about, something he’s going to have to do if he’s to unsettle Chelsea’s back line.
That Chelsea defence have drawn plenty of fouls this season with Colwill, Badiashile and Fofana all forcing plenty of fouls from opposition attackers. With their defensive line one of the best in the division, Thiago might also find himself frustrated by being caught offside and that frustration usually shows itself in the form of fouls.
