Man United v Brentford predictions
Man United to win & over 2.5 goals
Correct score: 2-1
WHEN: Saturday 19th of October, 3pm
WHERE: Old Trafford, Manchester
The major story of the International break was surrounding the ever-questionable future of Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. The 52-year-old has led the Red Devils to their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, surpassing the record he set last season.
Manchester United is currently 14th, six points behind the chasing pack for the top four places, and even more surprisingly, five points clear of the teams in the relegation zone.
The next set of fixtures could provide some solace for the under-pressure Dutchman. The Red Devils are set to face teams in the bottom half of the table in five of their next six Premier League games. A win for Manchester United could move them as high as eighth.
However, that would require a considerable goal swing in the Red Devils’ favour and results elsewhere falling in their favour.
Thomas Frank has been one of the names heavily linked with the prospect of switching dugouts following yet another impressive output from his Brentford side.
Brentford are set for another season of comfortability, although the progress made under Thomas Frank could see the Bees become an outside contender for a potential European place.
The departure of Ivan Toney has made no effect on their side, with the likes of Yoane Wissa and, in particular, Bryan Mbuemo adding assured firepower to the London-based outfit. Brentford are sat in tenth place after seven games played, and the Bees could find themselves in a European place if they were to pick up a priceless victory at Old Trafford.
Their meetings last season provided great entertainment regarding late goals in particular. Brentford were denied victory at Old Trafford, thanks to two injury-time goals from second-half substitute Scott McTominay. In the reverse fixture, it was Manchester United’s turn to suffer heartbreak, as a Kristoffer Ajer goal cancelled out Mason Mount’s earlier strike for the Red Devils.
Man United Team News
Manchester United have had players withdrawn from International duty, including Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo. However, they could be seen as precautionary. Leny Yoro remains unavailable for the Red Devils.
Brentford Team News
Yoane Wissa is ruled out for two months with an ankle injury. Igor Thiago remains a long-term absentee, whilst doubts also linger over Mathias Jensen.
Form Guide
Man United
Manchester United has the superior advantage over Brentford in terms of league meetings. Since Brentford arrived in the Premier League in 2021, Manchester United have won four of the seven meetings, drawing twice and losing once. The loss occurred in Erik ten Hag’s first away game as Manchester United manager, which ended 4-0 to the Bees. Brentford are yet to win away at Old Trafford, having lost their only three trips to the Theatre of Dreams.
United have only lost once in their previous five games, although context needs to be provided. The Red Devils have drawn four of their last five and lost the remaining fixture in a heavy 3-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
The hosts’ form at Old Trafford certainly needs improving, as Manchester United have only won twice at home and once in the league this season. Manchester United will also need to improve their scoring output, with only 0.33 goals scored per game at Old Trafford this season. Interestingly, only four sides in Europe have scored less than Manchester United this season: Lecce, Southampton, Crystal Palace, and FC St.Pauli.
Brentford
Brentford’s form this season has been a tale of two contrasting worlds. The Bees have been imperious at home, remaining unbeaten in all four league games, with three wins and a draw at the GTECH Community Stadium. Away from home, Brentford have lost all three league games and conceded seven goals, conceding an average of 2.33 goals per game. Scoring has also been an issue on their travels, scoring 0.67 goals per game despite their early scoring exploits.
The two previous away fixtures for Thomas Frank’s side saw Brentford take a dramatically early lead. However, on both occasions, they succumbed to an eventual defeat. Brentford have only failed to score in one fixture away from home this season, with their only away win in all competitions taking place against Colchester in the EFL Cup.
Man United v Brentford betting tips
Despite their recent struggles and surrounding speculation, we are leaning towards a Manchester United win for this game. Manchester United have the superior head-to-head advantage in this fixture, having won two of the previous three meetings against the Bees.
Expect goals in this fixture, considering Manchester United’s defensive frailties and Brentford’s goal-scoring exploits early on in fixtures. Manchester United have conceded three or more goals on three occasions already this season, with the Bees making history with their opening goal against West Ham United, becoming the first team in Premier League history to score in the first minute in three consecutive matches.
Brentford also have their defensive woes, failing to keep a clean sheet in their previous six in all competitions, which could leave Manchester United an opportunity to take advantage of their current situation. Bryan Mbeumo is our pick to make an impact in this game. Mbuemo is Brentford’s top scorer in the Premier League this season, with six goals in seven league starts. Mbuemo has scored five goals in his last five in the Premier League, including a brace against Southampton.
We expect a close game, but a home win is likely here. The hosts need a good result and Brentford’s away record of three losses in their previous four games could give United the helping hand they need.
Our prediction, Manchester United 2-1 Brentford
