Sunday 2:15pm: Everton v West Ham
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League

Everton put in a good performance against Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby. It really summed up their season so far – they have improved defensively a lot but are struggling to score.

Conor Coady and James Tarkowski give them a solid base. Jordan Pickford’s injured now but he showed why he’s England’s number one against Liverpool as he made some amazing saves.

Amadou Onana’s arrival and Idrissa Gueye’s return also look like sensible moves to me, but it’s goal-wise that I worry.

They have some threats – they hit the post against Liverpool and Demarai Gray has looked sharp – but they really miss that focal point Dominic Calvert-Lewin brings. If he’s back this weekend he’d be a big addition for them.

West Ham have been unlucky this season. And not just with the Chelsea game, where VAR ruled out Maxwel Cornet’s late equaliser, but also against Spurs, where they were probably the better side.

It’s not the start they’d have hoped for considering how good they were last season, but they’ve got a good side and I can’t see them in the lower half of the table in a few weeks’ time.

They’ve signed a few good players over the summer too, but they need to gel with the squad and that can take a bit of time. It makes this a tough game to call. I can see Sunday’s game being a real struggle for goals.

Everton have definitely made improvements at the back, but. even if Calvert-Lewin plays we don’t know how fit he’ll be, so if I had to pick a side I’d go for West Ham in a tight game.

It’s just hard to see where goals will come from for Everton and the visitors will fancy themselves to nick one. They’ve not had the rub of the green recently but are good enough to get a result here.

For Everton, Gray has looked sharp to me and presents Everton’s biggest threat if Calvert-Lewin doesn’t play. He was unfortunate against Liverpool not to score.

Lucas Paqueta looks a real player but might take time to fit in for West Ham. Jarrod Bowen though, in my opinion, is highly underrated and could be crucial on Sunday.

Especially away from home, he carries a huge threat with his pace on the break and he can get out and away from defenders any time he’s on the ball.

Onana in Everton’s midfield was booked in the derby and looks like a player who could pick up a few more cards before the season is over.

Thomas Soucek’s battle with him in midfield will be big and he could end up in the ref’s notebook too. If Allan plays he’s always likely as well, though he hasn’t been in the team recently.

It should be a feisty game. These are two teams that haven’t started as well as they’d have liked, and sometimes the kind of desperation can lead to lunges and tackles so it should be a full-blooded game.
