Sunday 5pm: England v Switzerland
Euro 2024 quarter-final match, Dusseldorf
TV: BBC One and RTE 2

It’s hard to know what to say without simply repeating the previous England previews. Yes, they were again poor, and yes, they again somehow got away with it.

Having been within about a minute of going out of Euro 2024 against a Slovakia side ranked 45th in the world, Gareth Southgate and his not-very-merry men must now take on Switzerland. By the measure of the FIFA standings, they will be the toughest opponent England have faced in the competition.

The Swiss have looked good too. No team has allowed fewer shots on target while they have also scored in every match. Switzerland almost beat Germany and dispensed with Italy with ease. As such, England should be worried, but they’ll probably fluke their way into the semi-finals somehow.

Here are five player prop selections for the match. They all come under Paddy Power’s Super Sub offer, so if the player you back is substituted, their replacement then carries your bet.

Harry Kane to Score

These sides have bagged their goals in different ways. England have two players, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, with two strikes each while Switzerland have had seven men score one apiece.

But when it comes to shots, there’s a clear leader on each side. Kane has had 13 attempts, over three times as many as any England player other than Phil Foden. The less said about his eight efforts, when onside, the better.

Dan Ndoye to Score or Assist

Switzerland’s Dan Ndoye has also had a baker’s dozen of shots, with at least two in every match. His tally is arguably more impressive than Kane’s as he has played a variety of positions rather than one. Ndoye has been deployed in attacking midfield in a 3-4-2-1 system, in the front two against Scotland and at right wing-back versus Italy.

He also looks a better bet than Kane to set up a goal. Only Granit Xhaka has recorded more shot-creating actions for the Swiss, with the Bologna player his country’s top man for carrying the ball into the penalty area and touches in the box.

Ndoye has been contributing no matter where he plays, so pick him to score or assist and Kane to score any time. This game looks destined to end 1-1, as that has been the 90-minute outcome for England’s last three knockout games at the Euros. These look to be the players that will make it happen.

Michel Aebischer to be Fouled 1 or more Times

Ndoye has two Bologna teammates in the Swiss squad. Remo Freuler is one, Michel Aebischer the other. It is the latter who looks good value in the ‘to be fouled’ market.

Only Ndoye has suffered more among Switzerland players at Euro 2024, for one thing. Aebishcher is consistent too, having started and been fouled in all four matches, winning a pair of free-kicks in each of the last three games.

And if we tack on the end of the domestic Serie A season, the Switzerland wing-back has been fouled in 10 of his last 12 starts in all competitions. Aebischer plays on the left of the Swiss 4-3-3 formation so he can probably expect Kyle Walker to foul him at some point on Saturday.

Declan Rice to Commit 1 or more Fouls

Or maybe Aebischer will be taken down by Declan Rice? It feels surprising that he is not among England’s shortest-priced players in the ‘Player To Commit 1 Or More Fouls’ market. Granted, he got through two hours against Slovakia without being penalised but only Conor Gallagher has committed more fouls at Euro 2024.

The Chelsea man surely won’t start this match after the performances he has served up at the tournament. Though as Southgate will be looking for a centre-back and maybe a left-back, who can say?

Rice is comfortably the Three Lions’ top player for tackles and it only takes one to be mistimed for the referee to award a foul. The Arsenal man committed one in his final nine Premier League starts so could easily do so here against a strong Switzerland side.

Ruben Vargas to have 1 or more Shots on Target

One of Switzerland’s septet of players who has scored at Euro 2024 is Ruben Vargas. He bagged the opener against Italy, a very important goal, yet he has only had five shots at the tournament.

Vargas tends to find the target, having done so four times so far. The 25-year-old has tested the opposition goalkeeper in all three of his four starts in Germany.

He plays his club football in the country too, for Augsburg, and his record in 2023/24 was like his European Championship form. While he doesn’t have that many shots, they tend to be accurate.

In all competitions, including international football, Vargas has made 21 appearances of longer than 65 minutes this season. He only failed to record a shot on target in three of them. Assuming he gets the nod from Murat Yakin, he will ask at least one question of Jordan Pickford. I doubt he’ll know the answer.
