Sunday 8pm: Scotland v Hungary
Euro 2024 Group A match – Stuttgart
TV: BBC and RTE
Scotland +1
Scotland showed their mental strength against Switzerland to bounce back and earn a deserved draw after a woeful performance on the opening night of the tournament against Germany. It was the type of display that had all the hallmarks of a Steve Clarke team and is the standard that is set ahead of Sunday’s showdown. It will have boosted confidence in the camp dramatically.
Hungary, meanwhile, appear to be a little vulnerable. Not only have they lost their two Euro 2024 matches, giving them only an outside chance of progression, they were also defeated by the Republic of Ireland in a warm-up friendly – a match designed to give them a taste of what’s in store against Scotland. The Scots are a strong price to at least claim a draw.
Scott McTominay to Have 1+ Shots on Target
Scott McTominay has transformed himself into Scotland’s talisman over the course of the entire Euro 2024 campaign, qualifying included. Having netted only once previously for his country, he has scored eight times including the qualifiers.
He has made an art of crashing the box late for Clarke’s side and offers both smart finishing, having been a striker in his younger days, but also an aerial threat that teams can struggle to cope with.
Scotland, who have won 59.3% of their aerial duels, will seek to exploit both these abilities against a team that has claimed only 52.8% success in this domain against the same opponents. He had 1.1 shots on target per 90 in qualifying and should be expected to be clutch once more for his country.

Both Teams to Score
It’s hard to see this match being played with either team keeping a clean sheet. Neither have good form in this regard in recent months. Scotland, who are down to the bare bones at the back due to Kieran Tierney’s injury, Ryan Porteous’ suspension and a long term issue with Aaron Hickey, have shut out their opponents only once in their last nine games. The clean sheet came against Gibraltar.
Hungary are not doing much better. In competitive fixtures, they are on a run of seven games in which they have conceded at least one goal. Both teams are likely to need to go for it at some stage, so expect an open and potentially high-scoring game.
Over 3.5 Cards
Scotland and Hungary have both picked up five cards in the competition to date, and it would be extremely surprising if this rate was to drop in what is a do-or-die fixture for both countries. Expect both teams to be extremely committed and seek to impose themselves physically upon the match, with the prospect of a suspension for the next round a small sacrifice as each country is desperate just to get there. All four Group A matches have seen at least four cards, and it’s conservative to predict there will be at least four shown in this one.
Dominik Szoboszlai to Have 1+ Shots on Target
Hungary’s dangerman in this encounter is clear: Dominik Szoboszlai. He emphatically led his side in terms of shots and shots on target in qualifying and will be the player they turn to in this encounter. While Scotland stopped Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka by employing McTominay to man mark him, Szoboszlai will be harder to police. He roams all over the park, allowing him to pick up pockets of space and cause mayhem wherever he
wishes.
He showed this against Germany as he offered three shots and one on target. Although he managed only 0.64 shots on target per 90 with Liverpool in the Premier League, in his six full seasons as a professional, he averages 1.01 shots on target per 90 in league football. Expect him to bring this form.
