Thursday, June 20: 20:00 – Spain v Italy
Euro 2024 Group B match – Gelsenkirchen
TV: ITV/ RTE2

When Spain and Italy were drawn together in Euro 2024‘s Group B it was widely thought to be this tournament’s ‘group of death’ and now with both sides having won their opening games they’re on a collision course, with the winner set to top the group. We’ve looked into the markets to find the three best bets for this huge game.

Spain to Win

While both Spain and Italy head into this clash on three points there was a stark difference in how each team performed in their opener. The Italians came back from an early goal to beat Albania and in truth they didn’t ever look like giving up the lead once they had regained it. However, it wasn’t a great performance given the quality of the opposition.

Spain on the other hand looked miles ahead of Croatia. They were quicker to the ball, more dynamic, hungrier and they also managed the game more wiley. We knew that this Croatian team was aging and a 38-year Luka Modric is proof that they were perhaps past their best but Spain really put them to the sword.

Spain are blessed with an intriguing mix of youth and experience in their team. Their defence alone had two Real Madrid players fresh from another Champions League win, Rodri who has won the lot for Man City and Alvaro Morata who has a deceptively good goal record given the amount of criticism he gets.

All of that combined with real youth. Pedri is still eligible for Young Player of the Tournament, despite winning it at the last Euros and Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal offered something hugely different on the wings.

This is a team that has evolved from the purely possession-based Spain that we’re used to seeing. They are a threat coming in from wide now and that’s made them more dangerous.

They’re more experienced than Italy, have more serial winners in their team and have electric pace, and have a striker who is more proven than Gianluca Scamacca who’ll be up top for the Azzurri. Getting over Evens on Spain feels like a real win.

Lamine Yamal to Score or Assist

Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal had an exceptional debut at the Euros against the Croatians.

He worked Spain’s right flank and used his directness to terrify Josko Gvardiol. His dribbling allowed him to weave his way towards the opposition byline and threaten Croatia and Italy aren’t blessed with a great leftback with Federico Dimarco his likely opposite number on Thursday.

Yamal doesn’t turn 17 until the day before the Euro 2024 final but he’s clearly a key part of this team already.

He didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet himself against Croatia but he had three shots, tied for the most on the team and was getting into the right positions, so you’d have to think that one will come eventually, especially given he has two already in his eight Spanish caps.

However, he did manage to register an assist against Croatia, setting up Dani Carvajal to score the third goal. This kid is the real deal, a superstar in waiting and the current odds are at a brilliant price for him to either score or assist against Italy, especially with that market covered by the Super Sub rules, allowing you to get his replacement, who would most likely be Ferran Torres if he does happen to be subbed.

Spain to Win 2-0

Trying to pick a correct score for this is tough but it’s hard to see Italy really troubling Spain, particularly as they dealt with Croatia with such ease.

This is arguably one of the worst Italian teams we’ve seen in a long time and besides the goalkeeper they don’t match up favourably at all. We’ve seen a long line of great Italian strikers down the years but the likes of Scamacca, with his one goal in 17 caps, shows how poor they are in front of goal now.

However, Spain’s attack is scary, with real pace out wide and somebody in Morata who knows where the back of the net is, even if he sometimes needs a couple of chances.

His record for Spain is just under one goal every two games, which is pretty good and he’s probably better suited now by Spain’s two wingers than he had been previously for his country.

We’ll take a 2-0 win for the Spanish that’ll put them in pole position for top spot in Group B.
