Sunday, June 16: 2pm – Poland v Netherlands
Euro 2024 Group D match – Hamburg
TV: BBC/ RTE2
We have a huge Sunday ahead of us at the Euros and first up is Poland v Netherlands. The Poles can’t rely on Robert Lewandowski, who misses this game with injury, while the Dutch will hope they can start the tournament well in a game in which they’re heavy favourites.

Netherlands to Win
The Netherlands come into this tournament without Teun Koopmeiners and Frenkie de Jong, who both had to withdraw thanks to injuries. Despite that, the Dutch will still have hopes to make progress here. They had a good qualifying campaign, winning every game besides two matches against the French, who they are in a group with again here.
That’s far better than Poland who managed to qualify via the playoffs, having finished behind Albania and the Czech Republic in their group. They’re also without their one legitimate superstar. The Dutch should have more than enough to win.
Both Teams to Score: No
A torn hamstring has ruled Lewandowski out of this game, which has deprived Poland of their X-factor. That’s quite bad news against a Dutch team that break the stereotype. This isn’t a great attacking Dutch team, instead, it’s one with a great defence, with Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake and Micky van de Ven, all of who will fancy their chances of shutting out Poland.
Lewandowski’s injury means we should see Krzysztof Piatek leading the frontline. His return of a goal every two games in the Turkish Super Lig is good but it’s not an elite league. Poland don’t offer much threat here and should come up empty-handed against a great Dutch defence.
Under 2.5 Goals
We’ve already covered why the Poles won’t score here but we also need to take a look at the Dutch forward line and in truth, they’re really lacking. We’re going to see their attack led by Memphis Depay, who will be finding a new club this summer after a poor stint at Atletico Madrid.
Former Burnley and Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst is their first option off the bench if Depay can’t score. We’ve also seen Cody Gakpo, who’ll start on the flank, struggle at Liverpool this term, while Xavi Simons is talented but perhaps not experienced enough at this level to be relied upon yet.
Xavi Simons to have 1 or more Shots on Target
Speaking of Xavi Simons, we’re going to back the 21-year-old to get a shot on target. He’s still young, having become a viral sensation as a youngster, and has had a good season at RB Leipzig this season.
His season in Germany saw him score eight goals in 32 games, and also put in a number of excellent performances. He’s only scored once in his 14 caps for the national team but his first goal was in their most recent game and he will be a threat in and around the box.
Tijani Reijnders to be Fouled 1 or more Times
The Dutch midfield is up in the air with De Jong and Koopmeiners missing but we know that we should see Tijani Reijnders. He’ll be popping up in the middle of the park, moving into spaces behind Depay and between Simons and Gakpo.
Taking up those spaces should put him in line to get fouled at least once, especially with Poland knowing that they’ll have to rely on beating the Dutch in midfield if they’re going to stand a chance.
