Ukraine Euro 2024 squad preview: Mudryk magic needed to reach the knockouts

Can the Chelsea man deliver for his country?

Ukraine qualified for Euro 2024 via the playoffs thanks to 2-1 victories over Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland. A late winner from Mykhailo Mudryk against the latter opponents secured a spot in their fourth consecutive European Championships.

They have changed managers since their appearance in the 2020 quarter-finals from one Premier League misfit to another, with Serhiy Rebrov replacing Andriy Shevchenko in 2023. The former Tottenham and West Ham man has steadied the ship since his nation’s absence from the 2022 World Cup and even earned draws against England and Italy in qualifying.

Getting through to the knockout stages isn’t out of the question and the Eastern Europeans sprung a surprise at Euro 2020. There’s obviously plenty of pride on the line here along with the talent on the pitch, in what is likely to be an emotionally-charged tournament for the men in yellow.

MANAGER: Serhiy Rebrov

CAPTAIN: Andriy Yarmolenko leads his nation into Euro 2024, having appeared for Ukraine at the previous three tournaments.

STAR PLAYER: After 18 months at Chelsea, making head or tail of Mykhailo Mudryk is still difficult. He is the perfect blend of Sunday League and world-class, and you never know which one you’ll see. He scored the goal that secured Ukraine’s place in the tournament and if he shows his world-class side 75% of the time, they can go to the knockouts.

HOW THEY GOT THERE: Ukraine had to earn their spot at Euro 2024 through the playoffs after finishing third in their group behind England and Italy.

HOW WILL THEY DO: It could well be a battle for second in Group E with Belgium favourites to finish top. Ukraine will need to get the better of Romania and Slovakia to make the knockouts or finish third with enough points. Playing those two before the Red Devils gives them a better chance.

BEST BET: Ukraine made the quarter-finals at Euro 2020 as one of the best third-place teams and they could repeat that or even go one better. If they set up correctly, they have every chance against Slovakia and Romania. Second place in this group plays second place in Group D (likely Austria or Netherlands), so with that fixture looking winable, taking Ukraine to reach the quarter-finals carries better value than to simply reach the last 16.
