Romania have enjoyed a run of good form over the past 18 months, losing just two games, and they came though their qualification group without tasting defeat.
The squad isn’t exactly full of household names but coach Edward Iordanescu’s gamble on youth has paid off. They mostly play in a 4-5-1 formation and aim to keep their opposition frustrated, conceding just five goals over their qualification matches.

CAPTAIN: Nicolae Stanciu is quite the decorated player. He’s won the league in China (Wuhan Three Towns), the Czech Republic (Sparta Prague), Romania (Steaua Bucharest) and Belgium (Anderlecht) and has won a cup in all of those leagues too (except for Belgium). He currently plays for Damac in Saudi Arabia.
STAR PLAYER: Steaua Bucharest’s Florinel Coman should impress. He scored three goals over the qualification campaign and has been a league winner in Romania with two different clubs. He’s coming into the tournament in great form too, having scored 19 goals for his club at home and in Europe this season.
HOW THEY GOT THERE: Romania breezed through Group I, winning six and drawing four, scoring 16 goals, conceding just five to finish top of the pile ahead of Switzerland.
HOW WILL THEY DO: In the Group Stage they could do well against an also defence-minded Slovakia and they’ll aim to frustrate Belgium and Ukraine, but a lack of experience in the ranks should mean a Last 16 place would probably be the measure of them.
BEST BET: Romania to be eliminated in the Last 16.
