Having been many a punter’s ‘dark horse’ at the 2022 World Cup, Serbia chalked up just a single point following losses to Brazil and Switzerland, sandwiched by a 3-3 draw with Cameroon.
Granted that draw and loss to the Swiss were among the best games at a World Cup that was full of great entertaiment, but the facts still state they failed to deliver.
In the year and a half since the Qatar, though, we’ve seen plenty of improvement from the younger players in the squad and their experience of playing in European competitions will make a huge difference here, especially against Slovenia and Denmark.

CAPTAIN: Dusan Tadic. At 35 years young, this will almost certainly be the last we see of the attacker in tournament football. The former Ajax and Southampton man, along with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic shoulders the creative work in the side and has the skills to unlock any defence.
STAR PLAYER: Aleksandar Mitrovic. Yes, yes, we know Dusan Vlahovic averaged a goal every second game for Juventus this season, but Mitrovic is still the danger man. Now playing with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia where he scored 27 in 26 games, the former Newcastle and Fulham man is an absolute nightmare for any opposition defender.
HOW THEY GOT THERE: Serbia finished second behind Hungary in a weak-looking Group G, winning four, drawing two and losing two. Montenegro, Lithuania and Bulgaria provided the other opposition.
HOW WILL THEY DO: They face England first of all where they could target a draw, and they’ll fully expect to take points from their games against Slovenia and Denmark too. There’s a sense around the team that they must right a wrong following their World Cup showing and they’ve certainly got the players to go far in the tournament.
BEST BET: Serbia Group C Runner Up.
