Football tips: Salah to seal our best Liverpool and City Champions League bets

Manchester City and Liverpool are in Champions League action on Wednesday

The Champions League continues on Wednesday with both Manchester City and Liverpool in action, looking to continue their perfect starts to this year’s competition.

City face a tough trip to Greece where they face Olympiakos while the Premier League champions are at home to Atalanta, having smashed the Serie A outfit 5-0 at the start of the month.

Paddy Power Football Trader Jason Murphy has scoured the markets and pulled together some tasty tips ahead of the clashes – check out his chat with PPTV Broadcaster Carl Monaghan in the video below.

Olympiakos v Manchester City [5.55pm] – Olympiakos & Draw Double Chance

This is not an easy trip for Manchester City, and that feeds into this tip. The value, looking at the prices, is to check out the Double Chance market – Olympiakos & Draw. It’s probably around 5/2 and they have a really good home European record – of their last 16 games at home, they’ve only lost two.

Yes, they might play a lot of easy European qualifying games, which is partly true. But having watched them last season, the two games they did lose were against Arsenal – when they actually went to the Emirates and went through in the tie – and Bayern Munich, who they only lost to 3-2. Bayern beat Tottenham 7-2 away from home…

Olympiakos are a really difficult proposition here while we know Man City are not firing on all cylinders coming into the game. They’ve only won two of their last five games, and only scored two or more goals in one of those games. You could therefore also look at Olympiakos slightly odds-on with a two-goal handicap. Man City should win the game, but with those prices I would be looking towards an Olympiakos positive market bet.

Ilkay Gundogan Manchester City Champions League

Olympiakos v Manchester City [5.55pm] – Phil Foden Anytime Goalscorer

I’m going to side with Phil Foden, having seen what he did for England against Iceland. He was very impressive and has scored for Man City this season, off the bench against West Ham. He took the goal really well and I expect Pep Guardiola to rotate. I think we will see Foden start, considering he didn’t play against Spurs at the weekend. I imagine that if he does start, he will probably be in an advanced role and is worth a look.

Liverpool v Atalanta [8.00pm] – Liverpool win

Last week when I was looking ahead to these games, I was tempted to side with Atalanta due to Liverpool’s injury concerns. Liverpool were drifting in the markets too, but after what happened on Sunday night with Fabinho declared fit, plus the performance they put in against Leicester, plus Mohamed Salah will also be available for this game, plus Thiago is likely to come back…

Atalanta are also in pretty bad form with one win in six games and are not shooting the lights out like they tend to do. They don’t score against Liverpool in their home fixture and didn’t score at the weekend against Spezia in Serie A. I’d be siding with Liverpool, despite the prices shortening.

Jurgen Klopp Mohamed Salah Liverpool Atalanta Champions League

Liverpool v Atalanta [8.00pm] – Mohamed Salah Anytime Goalscorer

We’re not going to overthink this one. Mohamed Salah has been declared available for the game and I imagine he will start. He’ll be on penalties and in the Champions League this season we’ve seen one given nearly every other game. I know we’re used to seeing them in the Premier League more so than they ever were, but when it comes to goalscorer bets its nice to have the penalty taker in your pocket – particularly in a competition where we’re more likely to see them given. Salah will be fresh, hungry and definitely worth a look.
