Spain to win
One criticism of the UEFA Nations League format is that it doesn’t lend itself to drama. It’s a fair method of determining teams’ positions, but there isn’t a sense of fear or dread.
And that may be true, particularly as the top level of the women’s game in Europe is so vast, and the division of sides can’t be exact.
So, you think – England and Spain? It’ll come down to the head-to-head inevitably, and the second game is the real face-off.
Well, until England looked appalling against Portugal and Spain returned from the dead in injury time to beat Belgium. Knowing Sarina Wiegman, she’ll trot the same team out to run it back.
If England need to go on the front foot, devoid of confidence, against the best team at moving the ball after winning it in the opposition half, they’ll be picked apart.
Yes, Spain looked shady in front of goal for long spells on Friday, but we’ll come to that.
Over 3.5 goals
Given the high-level clashes that both of these sides have faced over the last few years, going for goals seems like an odd choice.
However, that was the peak of the Lionesses’ powers, and they are starting to look a little bit like they’ve just released their seventh album and are stuck in creative limbo.
It’s worth noting that Spain eventually scored three times, but a more important statistic is the 36 shots attempted. Their evolution from mid-00s drivel to genuinely exciting passages of play has been fun, and they’re not giving up their principles. This is set up to be a cracker.
The only issue we may run into is that Spain could shuffle their deck and roll out an XI that aren’t used to playing together. The first half against Belgium was incredibly lacklustre, and despite a thinner squad than in recent campaigns, changes will have to be made to send the right message.
