Callum McGregor 1+ fouls committed
McGregor committed one foul in the first leg at Celtic Park. He’s averaging 0.89 fouls committed per 90 minutes in the Champions League this campaign, which may not initially appear as a standout but is notable when compared to his average of 0.36 fouls committed per 90 minutes in the Scottish Premiership this season.
This increase is likely a direct result of the increased defensive load McGregor has to manage in the Champions League. This is due to the improved quality of opposition sides asking Celtic more questions defensively than they are faced with in the Scottish Premiership, where they tend to be pretty dominant.
McGregor will be up against Jamal Musiala, who was fouled twice in the first leg and is averaging 2.11 fouls won per 90 across his nine Champions League appearances this season. He’ll be a constant threat for McGregor to manage, who may also have to make a few tactical fouls with Celtic needing a goal to get back into this tie.
Jamal Musiala 2+ fouls won
Musiala is one of the most elusive players in European football. His dribbling ability allows him to ghost past opposition players with ease and draw fouls as a result. This is reflected in his foul numbers this season: He’s won 14 fouls across his nine Champions League appearances this campaign (2.11 per 90).
Musiala drew two fouls in the first leg at Celtic Park; both were caused by the 21-year-old operating in tight spaces and moving away from his opponent just that split second before they could react.
He’ll be up against Callum McGregor, averaging 0.89 fouls committed per 90 in the Champions League this season, but saw a rise in this average to commit a foul in the first leg on Musiala.
Although only eight fouls were exchanged between the sides in the initial meeting, Musiala and McGregor’s involvement in three of these shows that their battle should still produce fouls in this encounter.
There is likely to be an increase in fouls in this second leg, with the picture clear for both sides of what is required to progress to the next round. This will result in a stretched game and tactical fouls on both sides, particularly for Celtic.
Michael Olise 1+ shots on target
Olise has had nine shots on target across his nine Champions League appearances this season (1.34 per 90). He had two shots on target in the first leg and scored Bayern’s opener with a brilliant finish at the near post after he brought down a long ball forward from Dayot Upamencano.
Olise has also been pretty consistent in finding the target in the Bundesliga this season. He’s managed 20 shots on target across his 22 appearances in Germany’s top flight (1.30 per 90), showing that he continues to be a threat to the opposition goal across a larger sample size.
Olise’s threat in the first leg suggests that he will continue to get chances in this game. His position on the pitch also encourages him to cut in and take aim at goal instead of taking his opposite fullback down the line.
Bayern Munich are averaging 8.2 shots on target per game in the Champions League—a total higher than any other side in the competition.
Daizen Maeda 1+ shots
Maeda scored what turned out to be a crucial goal for Celtic in their attempt to qualify for the next round of the competition. The winger tapped in from close range in a game with few chances for Celtic, but they showed they can get joy against Bayern in the wide areas where Bayern are slightly weak.
An injury to Alphonso Davies and the lack of a long-term established right back opens the door for Celtic to get joy in these areas of the pitch. This was evident in the first leg, with Kuhn having an early goal disallowed and Maeda on the opposite side finding the back of the net from two shots in total.
Celtic managed nine shots in the first leg. Bayern aren’t the most secure side defensively and can be vulnerable to attempts from opposition wide players. They can also be caught out on the transition with a high line employed by Vincent Kompany.
These factors should all contribute to Maeda having at least one shot in this game; he’s averaging 1.74 shots per 90 in the Champions League this campaign.
Bayern Munich to win
Bayern are rightly heavy favourites to come out on top at the Allianz Arena. Vincent Kompany’s side have won all four of their Champions League games on home ground this season. They have also remained unbeaten across 11 home games in the Bundesliga this season, winning ten of these games.
Celtic have already faced some challenging tasks in the Champions League this season, including a bruising 7-0 defeat to fellow Bundesliga side Dortmund and a 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa in their most recent away game.
Bayern have far superior firepower than Celtic, which suggests that even if Brendan Rodgers’ side can find a goal in this game, Bayern will outscore the Scottish giants in what should be a comfortable progression to the next knockout stage.
