Bayern Munich to win

It’s hard to see how Celtic cope with the attacking talent of Bayern Munich here. The German giants top several attacking metrics in the Champions League this season including shots on target per game (8.6) and expected goals (22.5).

Their attacking talent extends to the bench, which can be used to change the game if Celtic are more stubborn than anticipated.

Bayern have won five of their eight games in the Champions League this season, which in another campaign might have been enough to progress directly through to the knockout stages; Vincent Kompany’s side only missed out on the top eight by one point.

Celtic have improved dramatically on their previous campaigns in Europe.

However, this tie looks to be 1 step too far for Brendan Rodgers’ side, who may be able to break the Bayern Munich resolve with a goal but will struggle to match Bayern in attacking efficiency, which should see the Bundesliga league leaders take the lead into the second leg of the tie.

Adam Idah to have 2+ shots

Adam Idah has had nine shots across his 242 minutes of Champions League football this season (3.35 per 90).

Whilst this isn’t the largest sample size, Idah showed that he can contribute at this level by scoring two goals against Aston Villa in Celtic’s most recent Champions League game, where he also managed three shots on goal.

Idah also had two shots in just 15 minutes of action in Celtic’s penultimate Champions League league phase game against Young Boys, showing he doesn’t need much service to fashion out chances on goal. He’ll have to replicate this here, with Bayern Munich expected to dictate proceedings.

Idah also averages 3.90 shots per game in the Scottish Premiership this season. Furthermore, Idah has found the back of the net in each of his last three appearances across all competitions, meaning that he enters this game with plenty of momentum and confidence, which can translate to a few attempts on goal.

Callum McGregor to commit 1+ fouls

During this campaign, Callum McGregor has had to perform much more defensive work in the Champions League than in the Scottish Premiership.

This is evident in his averages across the two competitions; he’s only averaging 0.37 fouls committed per 90 in the Scottish Premiership, which is a total that rises to 0.88 fouls committed per 90 in the Champions League.

He’ll have a tough assignment against Jamal Musiala, who has averaged 2.12 fouls won per 90 across his eight appearances in the Champions League this season. Celtic are averaging 9.9 fouls committed per game in Europe this term, which is expected to rise here, with Celtic on the back foot for most of the game.

McGregor may have no choice but to bring down Musiala or another Bayern attacker when the game is stretched. The German side are so effective when they reach the final third. His increased defensive workload in the Champions League should result in McGregor making at least one foul in this encounter.

Jamal Musiala to be fouled 2+ times

Jamal Musiala is part of an exciting quartet of Bayern Munich attackers that can be unplayable on their day. He’s registered five goal contributions in the Champions League this season, averaging 2.12 fouls won per 90.

Musiala is unique because he can shield and travel very well with the ball in central areas, which is rare for a player of his profile and physical shape. He also has the talent to weave his way through robust and organised setups, reflected in his successful dribble numbers in the Champions League this season (2.65 per 90).

Musiala will face Callum McGregor, who has averaged 0.88 fouls committed per 90 minutes across his eight appearances in the Champions League this season. We can expect this average to rise against a player like Musiala, who is incredibly prolific at winning fouls.

Over 2.5 Celtic corners

Celtic have been pretty reliable at winning corners in the Champions League this season. Brendan Rodgers’ side has won 51 corners across eight games in the competition (6.3 per game).

They won four corners in their most recent Champions League game against Aston Villa and seven in their 1-0 win over Young Boys in their last Champions League game at Celtic Park.

Open play chances could be at a premium here for Celtic, so making the most of these set-piece situations will be vital if they want to take something into the second leg of this tie.

It’s an area they’ve been pretty consistent in this season, seeing over this line in all eight of their games in Europe this season, including games against Atalanta, Dortmund, and Aston Villa.
