Last weekend’s Premier League action was full of striking results – and some shock points totals in FPL.
PP football tipster Nathon Woodhead is back again with his advice on how to navigate Gameweek 23…
Talk about surprises, Gameweek 22 was full of them!
In-form Newcastle didn’t just lose at home to Borunemouth, they were battered. Manchester City defied all odds and found form, putting six past Ipswich, and of course the biggest shock of them all was Everton scoring three goals in one match for only the second time in the Premier League this season.
Let me tell you what wasn’t a surprise. Manchester United being humbled at home to Brighton and Amorin describing them as the worst United side in history. Arsenal as good as throwing the title away against Aston Villa, exactly what they did last season, and Southampton losing again… as they do every week.
Justin Kluivert topped the GW22 round scoring with 22 points, his biggest return of the season. Elsewhere, big returns were mostly provided by City players, with Foden (19), Kovacic (13), De Bruyne (12) and Doku (12) all finding themselves in the top six.
For the first time in a long time, the two most expensive keepers in FPL occupied the top two keeper returns With Alisson Becker delivering 9 points and Ederson 7. Despite this, we still think both are wildly overpriced at £5.5m and £5.3m respectively.
Ahead of GW23, what are the big talking points?
Well poor Ipswich travel to Anfield on the back of letting in six against City – things could get seriously ugly for the Tractor Boys. Cole Palmer returns to Manchester hoping to haunt his former club and Tottenham’s wobbly form might offer salvation for Ruud and his rubbish Leicester side.
What time is it? Time to predict what will happen in GW23
Lightning will *not* strike twice for the Toon
It was a mauling by Bournemouth in GW22, but we expect Eddie Howe’s men to return to winning ways against bottom of the table Southampton who have improved slightly under new boss Ivan Juric, but still continue to lose, albeit not as badly as before.
Paddy’s Pro Tip
GW14 through to GW21, Alexander Isak delivered attacking returns in a brilliant run of form. We fully expect the Swedish striker to reward the 59.1% who own him with a goal. Despite blanking in GW22, we recommend sticking with him.
Foden is back
Having delivered attacking returns in the previous four game weeks including double digits against Ipswich (19) and Brentford (15), we think if you haven’t already done so, you really need to bring Phil into your side.
Paddy’s Pro Tip
If you need funds to bring in the City midfielder, selling £11.4m Cole Palmer to make room might be the way to go as the Chelsea star has been erratic in form and often goes missing for a few games.
Wolves smell blood
Are Arsenal there for the taking against Wolves? It seems like it could be a tricky fixture for Arteta with his injury list piling up. Wolves are due a win and having lost at home to Manchester United and Newcastle in the cups and throwing away a two-goal lead against Villa in GW22, we think Arsenal will come unstuck.
Paddy’s Pro Tip
Cunha and Strand Larsen to cause problems for a makeshift Arsenal backline. Cunha hasn’t provided any attacking return in four gameweeks, but we expect him to deliver against the Gooners. The only problem is his run of games doesn’t look easy, with Villa and Liverpool in GW24 and GW25.
Bore draw
Does Crystal Palace vs Brentford scream goals? Does it scream clean sheets? I just don’t know. Based on absolutely nothing except gut feeling, we think this will be 0-0 and the last match shown on Match of the Day.
Paddy’s Pro Tip
Defensive assets from both clubs to hoover up the bonus points in this one. Dean Henderson at £4.5m could be a good shout.
