Tottenham to win
I can’t say I’m a massive fan of the new group stages of European competition, but there is something nice about every team competing with each other.
Well, in theory, at least.
Spurs and Hoffenheim are both coming into this tie with something to gain, and that’s perhaps the most important note to take, given the format.
While Spurs are clearly floundering in the league, we’re probably overstating their pain because people are familiar with ripping Angeball.
Hoffenheim, for all that they’re unbeaten at home in Europe this year, are three points off the relegation playoff in the Bundesliga.
And while a draw here might be OK with Spurs, given their closing fixture in the group stage next week, any dip in performance probably has the manager a bad result away from the sack.
This means something, and if it does, I’ll back the better team if both sides are in crisis mode.
Over 3.5 goals
That’s not to say we can ignore Tottenham’s insistence on embarrassing themselves. They could rest a couple of players here, meaning the game will be even more open than some of their recent outings.
Hoffenheim’s only other brush at home against decent competition came against Lyon, producing fireworks late on to bring a 2-2 draw – a perfect encapsulation of the madcap fixture it proved to be throughout.
Their domestic games have seen 58 goals in their 18 clashes, producing over three goals a game, including a slightly braver approach since Christian Ilzer took over in November.
Spurs? Well, we know how that’s going.
Spurs Goalkeeper to make 4+ saves
Well, it will be Fraser Forster or Brandon Austin in goal, won’t it?
Given the former has not been involved this calendar year and the latter sounds like a Triple-A affiliate closing pitcher, Spurs should see some action soon.
Kinsky isn’t registered to play, so Spurs’ goalmouth should see plenty of action here. Particularly given that Ange’s commitment to being entertaining usually leads to us being entertained by their shortcomings.
Richarlison to score or assist
When he’s not busy clapping Goodison Park instead of his travelling support, Richarlison still shows signs of being a very good footballer.
And given Brennan Johnson and Solanke missed the game at the weekend and their long-term health surely prioritised, you’d think Richarlison comes in here to tie them over in a fixture, which, while important, pales compared to what’s coming at the weekend.
Off the back of a goal against Everton, I expect to see him up top here.
Richarlison to be fouled 1+ times
A great footballer but still very kickable. For a good aggro check, Hoffenheim are committing twelve fouls a game in their domestic fixtures – more than twelve other sides in the Bundesliga.
Given their desperation for a positive result and the built-up frustration of conceding possession for the majority, this one’s a lock.
