Man United v Brighton
Premier League match at Old Trafford, Manchester
Both teams to score? Yes
Man United secured their first Premier League win in over a month in their come-from-behind victory over Southampton on Thursday night following a performance that failed to build on impressive showings against Liverpool and Arsenal.
A successive league win on Sunday – when Brighton come to town – would provide a welcome tonic, however, but United are yet to win back-to-back games in the Premier League all season.
They also have a score to settle against Brighton, who have won on each of their last two visits to Old Trafford, and beaten United in five of their last six league encounters.
Brighton ran out 2-1 and 3-1 winners in their last two trips to Manchester and it would not be surprising if both teams found the back of the net in the afternoon kick off on Sunday.
United have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight league games, and in any of their last 11 games in all competitions, so there is every chance they will concede on Sunday.
Brighton, on the other hand, kept a clean sheet in their win over Ipswich on Thursday but have only recorded two shutouts in their last 12 league games.
United will hope to continue their mini-revival against the Seagulls and should be confident of at least scoring.
Manchester United to receive the most cards
Brighton may commit more fouls per Premier League game this season, but they are not committing as many worthy of a yellow card.
United have received slightly more cards than Brighton in the league this season, with 48 bookings and two red cards in 21 league games. Brighton, on the other hand, have received 43 bookings and a single sending off in the same number of matches.
United collected two bookings to Brighton’s one when the sides met at the AmEx in August, out fouling Brighton by 13 to nine. They are decent value to repeat the feat on Sunday.
Amad Diallo to have 2+ shots on target
Amad Diallo spared United’s blushes in their victory over Southampton, via a 12-minute hattrick, to rescue a win from the jaws of defeat. The United winger has been by far their brightest spark this season, especially in recent games.
Ruben Amorim’s side have collected seven points in their last six outings; Amad has been directly responsible for six of those points.
The Ivorian was sensational on Thursday, and will be full of confidence against Brighton, who he scored against in August.
Amad averages two shots per game for United this season – the third-highest average of any Red Devils player – and will surely be looking to build on his game-winning performance. He could easily test Bart Verbruggen at least twice.
Nottingham Forest v Southampton
Premier League match at The City Ground, Nottingham
Chris Wood to score anytime
Few fixtures showcase how much Nottingham Forest’s fortunes have changed more than this one. They took a giant step towards safety when they beat Southampton 4-3 at the tail end of the 2022/23 season. A repeat on Sunday would see them keep pace with the top two.
Chris Wood has been an integral part of that unlikely title push, scoring 13 goals in a sensational first half of the season.
Only four players – Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, Cole Palmer and Alexander Isak – have scored more goals than him this season, and the New Zealander will look to continue his excellent form against the league’s basement side destined for the drop.
Southampton are on course to emulate the infamous 11-point Derby County side of 2007/08 and have conceded a whopping 47 goals in 21 games.
Wood, who has scored in three successive league games, will be confident of netting again on Sunday.
Over 6.5 Nottingham Forest corners
It’s no surprise to learn Southampton are in the bottom percentile of the Premier League in almost every metric.
Their record of 47 goals against is actually only the second-worst in the division after Wolves, but no team in the top-flight has faced more shots per game than Southampton’s 18.6.
Only Wolves have faced more corners than Southampton’s 6.6 per game.
Forest, who average a relatively decent 13.6 shots and 4.3 shots on target per home game this season, should have a field day against an error-prone Southampton defence, even if the Saints showed signs of life in the defeat at United.
Forest will dominate, and they should win a number of corners to reflect that.
