Newcastle to win
Out-of-form Man Utd are running into Newcastle at about the worst possible time. Eddie Howe’s men have been rampant in recent weeks, stringing together 4 successive wins and scoring buckets of goals in recent games. The Magpies have scored at least 3 in 5 of their last 6 while they netted 2 in the other.
By contrast, United have lost their last 3 and have failed to score in 2 as Ruben Amorim has struggled to turn around the fortunes of the Old Trafford side.
The Red Devils might have won 3-2 when the sides last met in May, ending a 3-game Newcastle win streak in this head-to-head, but they generated only 1.5xG compared to their opponents’ 2.2.
Alexander Isak to have 1+ shots on target
With 11 Premier League goals to his name this season, Isak is clearly Newcastle’s biggest threat coming into this match. He has 1.05 G+A per 90 this season, which is joint second in the division behind only Mohamed Salah.
Unsurprisingly, his shot count in sizeable. He has 22 shots on target for the season (1.54 per 90 mins), 10 clear of Anthony Gordon, his closest team-mate.
Isak has at least 1 shot on target in 9 of his last 11 starts, as well as multiple shots on target in each of his last 3 outings.
A Man Utd team that has conceded at least 2 goals in 5 of their last 6 domestic games will struggle to shackle him.
Bruno Guimaraes to be fouled 3+ times
Bruno Guimaraes is the Premier League’s most fouled player, having drawn 63 fouls so far this season – exactly 50% more than James Maddison, who stands second in this table.
Away from home, he has almost invariably picked up a big number of fouls. Across the 9 away Premier League fixtures he’s played for Newcastle this season, he has been fouled at least 3 times on 8 occasions and picked up a couple in the other game.
Not only does he find himself constantly at the heart of the action, he has only been taken off before the 80th minute twice in league action this season.
Man Utd to commit 11+ fouls
Amorim is trying to increase the intensity of Man Utd’s play both in attack and defence, and one of the spin-offs from this is that the Red Devils are now committing more fouls than at any point previously this season.
They have given away at least 11 fouls in each of their last 5 matches – the longest such streak this season. Wolves, Man City, and Bournemouth, who they have faced during this sequence, only pick up an average number of fouls compared to their Premier League rivals.
On the other hand, Newcastle earn an average of 13.0 per game, putting them joint second in the league in terms of fouls drawn, behind only Tottenham. Another sizeable foul count should therefore be expected from Amorim’s side.
Kobbie Mainoo to commit 1+ fouls
Kobbie Mainoo has committed 1.57 fouls per 90, second among Man Utd players who have featured for at least 300 minutes of Premier League football this season.
In his 12 league appearances, the 19-year-old has only twice not given away at least 1 foul. He is currently on a streak of 6 successive matches in which he has committed at least 1 indiscretion.
This area of the park is set to be a battleground, with Bruno Guimaraes and Mainoo taking shots at each other, and the chances of the England man emerging without adding to his sizeable foul count are slim.
