Southampton v Liverpool Tips: Wednesday’s 7/1 Bet Builder in the Carabao Cup

Tipster Andrew Cunneen is predicting another long night for the Saints.

Following the inevitable departure of manager Russell Martin on Sunday, the Saints return to action on Wednesday as they welcome Arne Slot’s Reds to St Mary’s in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Our football tipster, Andrew Cunneen, has searched the market for value in this game and has created a tasty bet builder to add excitement to what could be a very straightforward game.

So, here are his Southampton v Liverpool betting tips.

Liverpool to win

You see, people tell you to be aware of that new manager bounce, but it’s far more nuanced than that.

Things were terrible towards the end with Russell Martin. And I don’t just mean his hair.

The players’ frustration was evident, and the dejection of knowing the experiment was ending fueled their apathy.

That’s the worst one – when the players have just given into inevitability.

But Simon Rusk, the U21 manager, is in charge of this game. Players have little or no reason to extend themselves here.

He isn’t the long-term solution, and playing a team like Liverpool, who keep the ball in tight spaces, is just more of a wind-up.

He’s also likely to play the same team who just got slapped 5-0 at the weekend because why change it? It won’t impact you, and that takes any big decisions off your plate.

Cody Gakpo to score

The man has played eight times in the Carabao Cup and has scored eight times.

Liverpool’s forward line is obviously in flux somewhat, with Darwin Nunez looking like a practical joke week in, week out and Mo Salah’s contract situation being fluid at best.

If Salah is not extended, someone must step up and be the talisman between Diaz, Gakpo, and Jota as we roll towards the next phase.

Gakpo has been superb when he’s featured, and his run in this secondary competition speaks volumes. His braces against West Ham and Brighton, who represent more formidable opposition, mean that he’s likely to line out here with Salah resting – and just finding who the gameplan will centre around is half the battle with this unit.

Liverpool goalkeeper to make 3+ saves

Liverpool are not the typical tight-knit bunch that will win the league title thanks to 1-0 victories in ‘tough places to go’.

The one thing they’ve maintained throughout has been their entertainment value.

Brighton were well in the game in this competition, with seven shots on target. Fulham had three last week, and Newcastle had six before that.

This side will cough up chances, and Southampton won’t care a whole pile about winning this game – but they will go out there and be loose, as there are no expectations on them to produce a result.

Under 1.5 Southampton goals

I mentioned apathy above, and that’s the best way to describe it.

Southampton had a single booking despite conceding five at home last weekend. They’re not exerting themselves and feel no need to go head-to-head physically with anyone.

After all, there’s nothing to be angry about. Or perhaps more precisely, there’s nobody around to pretend you’re angry towards.
