7.30pm: Arsenal v Crystal Palace

Over 7.5 Arsenal corners
Crystal Palace’s trip to the Emirates on Wednesday could serve to be a dress rehearsal for the league meeting between the two sides at Selhurst Park this weekend, but it is no secret that Arsenal have relied on set pieces this season, especially recently.
Each of the Gunners’ last four goals in the league have come via a set piece, while Mikel Arteta’s side have scored a hugely impressive seven goals from corner kicks after just 16 games of the Premier League season.
They have won 109 corners in 16 games at a rate of just under seven per game, with their wide players often appearing to play for corners. Crystal Palace, on the other hand, have turned a corner after a difficult start to the season, taking nine points from their last five games.
However, they have had to dig in to do so, facing 39 corners in those five games at a rate of virtually five per game. In fact, Palace faced at least eight corners in four of those five encounters, only failing to do so against fellow relegation rivals Ipswich.
Arsenal could very easily win a high volume of corners on Wednesday night.
Bukayo Saka to be fouled 3+ times
Wednesday night could be a long evening for a Palace side that has had to fight tooth and nail to go unbeaten over their last five league games. Palace have registered extremely encouraging results of late, including a 2-2 at Aston Villa and a 2-2 home draw against Manchester City.
Their 3-1 win at Brighton on Sunday was also a statement victory that saw them put more teams between them and the bottom three. Those results required Palace to commit a significant number of fouls, however, particularly away from home.
Palace conceded an average of 11 fouls per game in that five-game stretch, which is pretty much identical to their league average of 10.9 per game, but they averaged 13 fouls per game in their three away games at Newcastle, Villa and Brighton.
They could well be forced into a similar number of fouls on Wednesday and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Bukayo Saka was fouled on a number of occasions.
The Arsenal winger was the only player who looked capable of making things happen during the forgettable goalless draw with Everton at the weekend and draws an average of 2.1 fouls per game in the league this season, the eighth-highest in the division and the highest of any Arsenal player.
Assuming he starts on Wednesday, it is not a leap to suggest that he will be targeted by the Palace defenders.
7.45pm: Newcastle v Brentford
TV: Sky Sports+
Both teams to score
Brentford are a mysterious team this season, boasting the best home record in the league and the joint-worst away record. Thomas Frank’s side have dropped just two points in eight home games this season but have taken just a point from eight away trips, leaving them squarely in mid-table.
That inconsistency has been Brentford’s downfall, but the Bees have been consistently one of the most exciting teams in the league. Both teams have scored in 14 out of 16 Brentford league matches so far this season, with Brentford scoring 32 and conceding 30 in their opening 16 games. Only Wolves have been involved in more goals.
Newcastle, on the other hand, have scored 13 and conceded 11 in their last six league games, including a 4-2 defeat at Brentford two weeks ago. There is a very good chance that Wednesday’s League Cup meeting will be just as exciting as the league meeting.
8pm: Southampton v Liverpool – Liverpool (-1)
TV: Sky Sports Football
Liverpool snatched a narrow 3-2 victory at St. Mary’s when these two sides met in the Premier League less than a month ago, but that already seems like a long time ago. That gallant defeat appears to have been one of Southampton’s last stands under Russell Martin, with the Saints losing three and drawing one of their next four games, scoring two goals and conceding 12.
Southampton are better off out of the League Cup, a competition they have almost no hope of winning, and are better served focusing on bettering Derby’s record of 11 points in a Premier League season, by no means a given with how their season has panned out to date. The Saints have only registered five points from their opening 16 games, conceding a whopping 36 goals.
Most of those goals have come at home, with Southampton conceding 21 goals in eight home league games. It doesn’t bode well for Wednesday’s meeting with Liverpool, who will be looking to return to winning ways after dropping points in back-to-back Premier League games for the first time this season.
Anything other than a comfortable Liverpool win would be a huge shock.
