Both teams to score, yes

It reflects how badly Manchester United’s season has gone so far that they sit level on points with Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League table after five games. Both sides boast an identical record of two wins and three draws.

That is now to diminish the performance of Plzen in the competition so far. However, a team of Manchester United’s resources should be at least in the seeded positions after five rounds of the competition.

United have not had the new-manager bounce that they would have hoped for under Ruben Amorim. They took four points from their opening four Premier League games under the Portuguese manager and won just two of their first five games in all competitions.

They are rightly installed as odds-on favourites for Thursday’s trip to Czechia, but they may have to score twice if they are to come away with the three points.

United have kept one clean sheet in five games under Amorim, which mirrors their defensive record in the Europa League.

To date, they have conceded seven goals in five rounds of the competition, scoring 10 goals in the process.

Plzen, on the other hand, have scored nine and conceded seven, and they have also managed just one clean sheet so far.

All signs point to a high-scoring game on Thursday.

Yes Both Teams To Score

Bruno Fernandes to have 3+ shots

Bruno Fernandes struggled at the beginning of the season but has discovered a new lease of life since Erik Ten Hag’s departure.

He is still not at the heights he reached in previous seasons for United. But Fernandes’s goal against Nottingham Forest at the weekend means he has now scored five goals in nine games since Ten Hag departed, a huge improvement on the scoreless start to the season he made under the Dutchman.

He will be out to improve his goalscoring record for the season on Thursday night, and there is nothing to suggest that he will not try his luck on several occasions.

Fernandes averages 2.7 shots per game for United in the Premier League, the most of any player at the club, and 3.3 shots per game in Europe, the second-most.

He is incredibly likely to reach at least three shots against Plzen on Thursday.

Kobbie Mainoo to commit 2+ fouls

Kobbie Mainoo is undoubtedly a tremendous talent, but he must keep his discipline in check.

The young English midfielder has already missed a league game through suspension after accumulating five yellow cards before the end of November, despite missing a hefty chunk of the season through injury.

Mainoo picked up five bookings in his first eight league appearances this season, which is no surprise considering he leads the way in fouls per game, averaging 1.6 fouls per game for United this season.

Mainoo only averages one foul per game in the Europa League, but that must be qualified because he has only made one substitute appearance in the competition so far.

He is an excellent price to commit at least two fouls on Thursday night.

Over 3.5 cards

Plzen and United are by no means the worst disciplined clubs in the competition, but it is still surprising that they are odds-against to accumulate at least four cards on Thursday.

United have received six bookings and one red card in five games at a rate of roughly 1.5 cards per game, while Plzen have received 10 bookings and a sending-off at over two cards per game.

Plzen also boast the fairly significant average of 11.2 fouls per game, leaving them in mid-table in the Europa League foul standings.

Across all competitions, meanwhile, United are averaging over two cards per game and roughly 10.5 fouls per game.

Thursday’s game is unlikely to be overly bad-blooded, but there is a very good chance there will be at least four cards.

Over 10.5 corners

United may well hit this target by themselves on Thursday night.

The Red Devils are averaging almost exactly seven corners per game in the Europa League and have twice reached 10 corners in a single game in their five games in the competition.

They also rank second in the tournament in terms of shots per game, attempting an average of 19.4 shots, while Plzen face the relatively high average of 15.2 shots per 90 minutes.

There is a very good chance that United will win close to ten corners on Thursday, and they should concede a few of their own at the other end.

United concede more than three corners per game in the Europa League on average and will almost certainly afford chances to the hosts.

Between them, they should comfortably clear 10 corners.
