Aston Villa to win
Aston Villa finally snapped an eight-game winless run with back-to-back home wins over Brentford and Southampton, but they remain without an away win in any competition since beating Fulham in mid-October.
Villa’s failure to beat either Club Brugge or Juventus during that winless run has seen them drop out of the top eight in the Champions League standings. They need a win in Germany on Tuesday night to give themselves a chance of claiming one of the automatic knockout spots.
RB Leipzig, on the other hand, are one of just three teams left in the competition yet to pick up a point, but can count themselves quite unlucky to have lost all five of their games. Leipzig lost four of their five group games by a single goal and led in three of their five games to date.
They are due a win in the competition, even if their hopes of reaching the play-offs are all but extinct. However, they are also enduring difficult form domestically, taking just four points from their last five Bundesliga games, including a 5-1 home defeat against Wolfsburg two weeks ago.
Villa can emulate Liverpool by taking an important three points here.
Under 3.5 goals
None of Villa’s five games so far have seen more than three goals. In fact, discounting their 3-0 win against a wretched Young Boys outfit in the competition’s opening game, none of Villa’s games in the Champions League have seen more than two goals.
Unai Emery’s side recorded a 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich and a 2-0 victory over Bologna before losing 1-0 in Brugge and drawing 0-0 against Juventus. None of their five games has seen both sides find the back of the net.
There is nothing to suggest that their low-scoring trend will change on Tuesday night.
Leipzig have lost two of their five games by a 1-0 scoreline and lost by that margin when Liverpool came to town in October. It may not be such a low-scoring affair on Tuesday, but it is highly unlikely to be a high-scoring one either.
Jhon Duran to score
Jhon Duran’s ridiculous goalscoring rate has slowed down considerably since the start of the season, when the Colombian forward seemed to score every time he came off the bench. The Colombian was highly influential in Villa’s opening three Champions League games, grabbing the winner against Bayern and scoring in the win over Bologna. He also had a goal ruled out in the win over Young Boys.
Duran’s goal against Southampton at the weekend was his first league goal in over two months, and it was his first goal in any competition since the end of October. That goal may have given him some much-needed confidence, and he is decent value to find his the back of the net here.
Lois Openda to have 4 or more shots
Leipzig do not exactly boast the stats of a team with 0 points from five games. They average 12.4 shots per game in the competition, which actually ranks them above Villa in the Champions League, and have averaged four shots on target per game, again ranking them above Villa.
The Bulls are likely to have a go on Tuesday in a bid to restore some pride to their Champions League campaign and ensure that they do not finish pointless, so it stands to reason that they will attempt a number of shots against a Villa side that has faced an average of around 12 in the Champions League this season.
There is no Leipzig player more likely to try his luck than Lois Openda.
The Belgian striker averages roughly three shots per game for the Germans in the league, by far the most of any player at the club. He leads the way for Leipzig in the Bundesliga, scoring five times, but is yet to score in Europe this season.
There is every chance that he will shoot on several occasions on Tuesday night and he is good value to try his luck at least four times.
