Celtic -1
Aberdeen had drawn three successive matches with Celtic before the League Cup semi-final a month ago. Yet, Jimmy Thelin’s side capitulated to a 6-0 defeat on that occasion and are likely to find the going tough against the Premiership leaders in this one, too.
Celtic have won 17 games this season, 16 of which came by a margin of at least two goals. Having looked irresistible against the Dons during their last meeting and coming off a 5-0 win over Ross County at the weekend in which they flexed their offensive muscles even with a fringe side, the visitors are likely to make their quality count at Pittodrie.
Daizen Maeda to have 1 or more shots on target
Maeda has been strangely limited in the Premiership in terms of shots on target this season, but based on the evidence of Celtic’s last fixture against Aberdeen, the Japan international will be a hard man to pin down in this encounter.
The 27-year-old scored a hat-trick the last time Celtic faced the Dons, and after being withdrawn at half-time from Saturday’s match against Ross County, it’s clear that manager Brendan Rodgers has big plans for him in this encounter.
On his previous trip to Pittodrie, he had four shots on target, so it’s a ground he likes.
Nicolas Kuhn to score or assist
Nicolas Kuhn is on fire for Celtic and can claim to be the most important attacking player Brendan Rodgers has at his disposal. He scored or assisted in six of his last seven domestic games for Celtic.
Aberdeen are the exception during this run, but that’s not to say the German did not cause the Dons headaches. He had six shots in that encounter and after being rested entirely against Ross County at the weekend, the 24-year-old has every chance of making another decisive impact in this encounter.
Overall, he has directly impacted the scoresheet in 11 of 14 matches in Scotland he’s played for the Hoops, making this look good value.
Alistair Johnston to commit 2 or more fouls
Alistair Johnston will likely be under pressure from home winger Jamie McGrath in Aberdeen, who draws more fouls than any other player in the Premiership. The Ireland international has won 31 for his team this season at a rate of 2.7 per 90.
Johnston, meanwhile, lies second in the Celtic squad behind Daizen Maeda when it comes to committing fouls. He has done so 15 times in the Premiership this season at a rate of 1.34 per 90.
The last time this pair squared up, the Canadian gave away 3 fouls – the highest he has achieved in the Premiership this season, level with Saturday’s game against Ross County.
Jamie McGrath to have 2 or more shots
Winger McGrath is Aberdeen’s most consistent attacking outlet of the fit players they have for this match. The 28-year-old has attempted 26 shots this season at a rate of 2.26 per 90. Even at home against Celtic, he will be the Dons’ major threat.
He certainly posed Celtic problems the last time the sides met in the league, as he supplied two assists. In the five Premiership matches he has featured in since then, he has had at least three shots on four occasions – including five against Rangers.
This would be a winning bet in four of his last five home league matches.
