Two of the best teams in the world face off at Wembley on Saturday as defending European champions England host the USA, the defending Olympic champions.
The game marks the competitive return of US manager Emma Hayes to England after she stepped away from Chelsea at the end of last season. It will also be the penultimate international match for US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher who announced she will retire from USA duty after this break.

England have played ten games so far in 2024, and of those, only three have failed to get over 2.5 goals. As seen by the previous international break, England’s defence still has a mistake (or two) in them, and will give their opponents chances. They are still creating a good amount going forward (five goals in two games in the last break) but only two clean sheets in 2024 tells its own story.
Under Hayes the US are flying. They’ve scored three in each of their last three games, since their Olympic triumph, as Hayes moves the team out of tournament mode and into friendly mode. She will have to do without the fabled Triple Espresso forward line with Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson all rested, but in Lynn Williams and Jaedyn Shaw, has two players who know how to trouble defences and find the back of the net.

The US have been in terrific form under Hayes, winning the Olympics and then hammering Iceland twice and Argentina, in the most recent international break. Yes, they are without their three star forwards, but as well as Shaw and Williams, they still have a packed midfield and a rock-solid back line. They’re good value to get a result at Wembley.
Ultimately their experience could be too much for an England side that has sort of lost its way a bit this year, and Sarina Wiegman is missing key players, including Maya Le Tissier, Niamh Charles, Lauren Hemp, Lucy Parker, Ella Toone and Lauren James. With limited options, Wiegman will probably have to either select some very experienced players up front, those out of form, or a mixture of the two.
Georgia Stanway to score anytime
If England are going to get any real joy from the US, without a lot of their key attacking players, then Georgia Stanway might be key. The midfielder has four goals and three assists this season at Bayern Munich, and not only does she take penalties for the Lionesses, she also has one of the best long shots in the world.
If the game is tight, or England are struggling to break their opponents down, there is every chance Stanway could decide to have a go from distance and there’s a decent chance it goes in. Other anytime options include Williams and Shaw from the US whilst Aggie Beever-Jones and Jess Park are others to consider for England.
