Sydie Peck to commit 1+ fouls
With Ollie Arblaster out long-term through injury, it has opened up the door for Sydie Peck to enjoy a regular run in the team. This really is his breakthrough season in many ways, and he will be desperately keen to impress and make the most of this opportunity.
With that being the case, the 20-year-old has showcased a certain side to his game that is often attracting him to the attention of referees. It would be fair to say Peck loves a tackle and to really get stuck into the action.
The central midfielder has made nine starts for The Blades this season, and within those, he has averaged 1.33 fouls per match. In five of those he committed at least two.
Luke O’Nien to commit 1+ fouls
Sunderland have been forced into a defensive reshuffle recently that has seen usual centre defender Luke O’Nien revert to a right-back role. He is versatile, so is able to cope with this better than most, but ultimately it is not his strongest position in the back line.
He is set to retain this role for Friday’s trip to Bramall Lane, which is the sort of match that even the most experienced of natural full-backs would likely find tough. It will undoubtedly be O’Nien’s biggest test of the season so far, given the switch, and he could be forgiven for giving away a foul or two on the night.
Even so, this is a player that has committed at least one foul in three of his last four appearances. It is by far his most frequent run of conceding such offences this season, having barely made any prior to this streak. The change in position has likely contributed towards this.
Dan Neil to commit 1+ fouls
Dan Neil to thriving off the extra responsibility that has been handed to him by manager Régis Le Bris. Playing him as a holding midfielder, which sees him become an extra centre back out of possession, showcases a whole new side to his game. Playing in his modified role will naturally lead to him conceding some fouls occasionally, however.
The 23-year-old is a local lad and has been on the books at the club for around 14 years. This means a lot to him and he can sometimes take that onto the pitch with him. Every tackle means something and he is not an individual to give anything less than 100% in every action he performs.
Neil has committed two fouls in each of his last two appearances, which is no coincidence. Injuries and suspensions of late have hit the squad, and Neil has taken it upon himself to give that bit more. However, it has led to fouls and that could easily continue away to Sheffield United.
Gustavo Hamer to have 1+ shots on target
One player who is more than at home in the Championship is Gustavo Hamer. Both with Coventry and now at Sheffield United, he just gets it at this level and knows exactly how to use his qualities to the best effect. So much so that his manager Chris Wilder has handed him something of a free role this season, and he clearly loves playing with freedom in attacking areas.
Hamer is the joint second-highest scorer for The Blades in league action this season. He tops their squad list in relation to goal involvements (goals and assists) in the Championship, too. Also, despite not being a striker, none of his teammates have managed more shots on target than he has.
In all competitions, Hamer has averaged 1.00 shots on target this season. In two of his last four, including in the midweek home win versus Oxford, he recorded at least two shots on target. This is a player really at the top of his game right now, and he not only has a sheer willingness to get shots away, but he regularly works the goalkeeper when doing so.
Wilson Isidor to have 1+ shots on target
As far as loan signings go, Wilson Isidor has already proven to be a successful example of how to utilise this market. The 24-year-old is on a season-long move from Zenit Saint Petersburg and a few months into it he may already be plotting a permanent switch to Wearside.
Isidor is Sunderland’s top scorer this season in all competitions with five, plus he also top’s the squad in terms of xG. He is very much the man getting on the end of things and there is no reason for him to drop out of the team any time soon.
The Frenchman is also ranked first in the team for shots on target. Considering Romaine Mundle (injured) and Eliezer Mayenda (just back from injury) are second and third, respectively, in that category, it means he’ll really have to deliver away at Sheffield United. Over his last 11 appearances, all of which he has started, only in three of those did he fail to record a shot on target. Over his most recent six, it is only in one match when he did the same.
