5pm: Napoli vs Roma – Napoli to win
Napoli suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat against title rivals Atalanta in their last home game before the international break, followed by a 1-1 draw at the San Siro against Inter Milan, another title rival.
They retain a lead at the top of the Serie A table, but only barely, and it is therefore imperative that they get back to winning ways against a struggling Roma side.
Roma are currently just four points above the relegation zone in Serie A having lost four of their last five league outings.
Sunday marks a new beginning for Roma, with Claudio Ranieri set to take charge for the first time after Ivan Juric was sacked following their 3-2 home reversal against Bologna two weeks ago.
It is a daunting debut for Ranieri and he may have to wait a while before earning his first points as Roma boss.
5.30pm: Leganes vs Real Madrid – Real to win
Real Madrid received a much needed tonic in the form of a 4-0 home win over Osasuna in their final La Liga match before the international break following back-to-back home defeats against Barcelona and AC Milan, including a 4-0 loss against their fiercest rivals.
Madrid have been way off it so far this season and but for a stirring second-half fightback against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, they would have just three points from their opening four games.
Domestically, Carlo Ancelotti’s side look inferior to Hansi Flick’s Barcelona and currently sit six points adrift in the table with a game in hand, although the real story is in the goalscoring, with Barca outscoring Madrid by 15 goals at this early stage of the season.
Madrid simply must win on Sunday at Leganes to give their season a shot in the arm. There is nothing to suggest that they won’t. Leganes currently sit 14th in the table having won just three of their 13 games to date.
To their credit, Leganes have won each of their last three home games but that run should come to an end on Sunday.
7.45pm: Lazio vs Bologna – Lazio to win
Bologna have improved significantly after a shaky start to their Serie A season, winning three games on the bounce before the international break to finally pick up some momentum and move towards the Champions League places.
Lazio, on the other hand, are in even better form, winning four games on the bounce to close the gap on Napoli to just a point in an incredibly tight title race at this early stage of the season, with two points separating Napoli in first and Juventus in sixth.
Lazio are unbeaten at home this season and have only dropped points once – in a 2-2 draw with AC Milan back in August.
Bologna may have rediscovered some of the form that saw them qualify for this season’s Champions League, but they will have their work cut out to make it four wins from four on Sunday night. Lazio should keep up the pace in the title race.
7.45pm: Nice vs Strasbourg – Nice to win
Nice are one of many teams in France to be in contention for European places without having any chance of challenging runaway leaders PSG for the title. Nice have made a fairly respectable start to the season, picking up 17 points from 11 games to occupy sixth place at this early stage of the campaign.
They are unbeaten in their last seven league games and are also in all home games in all competitions so far this season. They shouldn’t have too many problems against a Strasbourg side that has lost three of their last four and conceded 22 goals in 11 Ligue 1 games to date.
Strasbourg are also without a win in any of their five away league games so far, picking up just two points.
8pm: Atheltic Bilbao vs Real Sociedad – The Draw
Athletic Bilbao entered the international break on the back of three straight draws in the league, which has seen them fall slightly off the pace in the race for Champions League places and has also allowed Basque neighbours Real Sociedad to close the gap on them to just two points.
La Real had not made the most convincing start to their league season but entered the international break on a high following consecutive wins over Sevilla and Barcelona.
They will be high on confidence ahead of Sunday night’s Basque Derby but have not won at the home of their local rivals in their last four attempts.
Bilbao, on the other hand, are beginning to emerge as one of the league’s draw specialists, drawing four of their last six outings in La Liga and five overall. Only Getafe have drawn more games in La Liga this season. There is a good chance Sunday’s Basque Derby will end in a stalemate.
