Leeds to win
Whenever Leeds have a setback they generally bounce back pretty quickly. This happened before the international break as the 1-0 loss at Millwall was followed by a 2-0 home triumph against QPR. The last time they lost in the league earlier in the campaign, Daniel Farke’s side responded with an eight-match unbeaten streak. Something of that nature could easily happen again.
Swansea may end the weekend in the top-half of the table, but it is arguable they are one of the teams Leeds would’ve wanted to face right now. That’s because there is an interesting angle that’s hard to ignore when focusing on their results this season. The Welsh club have won one in eight versus clubs above them in the table. All six defeats were 1-0, meaning they’ve scored only two across those eight games.
Brenden Aaronson to have 1 or more shots on target
USA international Aaronson was in action for his country this week, but he will also be glad to be back to his club. This is because the 24-year-old has recorded two goals in his last five appearances for the Elland Road side. Having initially struggled to make an impact when signing, dropping down into the Championship has seemingly helped him settle, and adhere himself to the Leeds fans.
Aaronson also has form in the book in relation to hitting the target in recent times. In fact, in four of his previous five club appearances – he has recorded a minimum of one shot on target. This is a player that is only second to Joel Piroe in goals scored in league action for the club, so he is clearly an active goal threat this season. The American is also fourth in the team for shots on target. Merely maintaining his recent form stands would give the attacking midfielder a solid chance of at least one shot on target on Sunday.
Dan James to have 1 or more shots on target
The expectation is for Daniel Farke to restore Daniel James to the starting XI after resting him to the bench prior to the international break. This was a sensible move knowing he’d play twice for Wales over the break, which he did, but the Welshman will be desperate to play. That is because the winger spent five years at Swansea, which is where he made his professional debut. He would earn a move to Manchester United on the back of this, so he has fond memories of playing in Swansea.
James hasn’t fired in many goals recently, mainly due to squad rotation, as he worked his way back in after injury. He’s almost back, if not at, full strength once more. Since returning from a five-week injury in October, his statistics suggests he’s getting back to his impactful strongest. He started three of those six matches in Leeds colours, and in the three starts, James averaged 2.67 shots and had at least one shot on target.
Joel Piroe to score or assist
Leeds’ top scorer in the league this season is Piroe with six goals, which is made all the more impressive considering he’s only started seven Championship games. He recently broke into the starting XI on a more consistent basis and he’s not let anyone down. The Dutchman was rested to the bench in the last league game, but came on to score, meaning he’s set to be restored to the team once more.
This also another example of a player desperate to face his former club as Piroe netted over 40 goals for The Swans from 2021 to 2023. The 25-year-old has netted two goals in his last three appearances, in which he averaged 3.67 shots per game and 1.33 shots on target. Five of his six goals have been in a Leeds victory and a repeat on Sunday would be no surprise at all.
Under 4.5 cards
Dean Whitestone will be the man in the middle for this Championship battle. This official has dished out an average of 3.6 cards per game across his campaign. In eight of those ten, the maximum number of cards he gave out was four, which suggests Sunday’s fixture is more likely to fall that way than not.
However, further evidence is backed up by the respective disciplinary records of Swansea and Leeds. Heading into the weekend, the pair are identical in that regard as they’ve each received 30 yellows and zero reds in the league season. This works out as an average of two cards per match. This is quite low compared to the rest of the teams as they are ranked 15th and 16th in the division for cards received.
