Barnsley v Wigan – Barnsley to win

EFL League One match at Oakwell Stadium, Barnsley
3:00pm

Barnsley may have started the season slowly under new manager Darrell Clarke, but things are starting to click for the Tykes in fifth place. With eight new signings, and several big-name departures, it was expected the squad would take a while to gel, but they are starting to look like promotion contenders.

Clarke is one of the most respected managers in the Football League and it’s believed he’s the man to take Barnsley back to the Championship. While he is yet to start a game, Kelechi Nwakali was given man of the match off the bench against Cambridge, adding much-needed tenacity and energy to the midfield. This afforded Jon Russel and Adam Phillips more attacking freedom. Clarke seems to have found his best starting XI and they will be hard to stop – particularly at home.

Wigan are the visitors to Oakwell. Shaun Maloney’s side are currently 19th in the league, just one point clear of safety. The Latics are struggling financially so they have to rely on young players to fill their match-day squad.

Defensively, they have been strong, conceding just 12 goals. However, only Stevenage have scored fewer than their 12 goals. The main worry for Maloney is his team’s recent form. A 2-0 loss at struggling Cambridge was followed by a 1-2 home defeat to newly promoted Mansfield. They then made the short journey to Blackpool, capitulating to draw 2-2 after leading 0-2.

Wigan then lost 0-1 to Wycombe which sees them linger just above the drop zone. The visitors will set up not to lose but may struggle to contain a free-flowing Barnsley.

Lincoln City v Wycombe  – Over 2.5 goals

EFL League One match at Sincil Bank, Lincoln
3:00pm

The tie of the weekend looks to come from Sincil Bank with two promotion hopefuls in Lincoln and Wycombe facing off.

Under Michael Skubala, The Imps are flying, almost sneaking into the playoffs at the back end of last season. The 42-year-old has transformed his side, and they sit sixth in the league, just four points off the automatic promotion places.

At home, Lincoln have scored 12 goals and conceded nine, with their matches averaging three goals. Only the 0-0 draw with Wigan has not seen at least three.

Wycombe have been the team to beat in League One and are currently defying expectations in first place. Matt Bloomfield has The Chairboy’s potent in attack, scoring in every single game, with 32 goals scored overall, Wycombe are the top scorers in the league, with games averaging 3.43 goals.

Of their eight away games, seven have seen over 2.5 goals except for the recent 0-1 win against low-scoring Wigan.

Peterborough v Reading – Peterborough to win

EFL League One match at ABAX Stadium, Peterborough
3:00pm

Peterborough started the season sluggishly after losing to Oxford United in the playoff semi finals. However, Darren Ferguson is finally getting a tune out of his youthful side. Posh are 12th in the league, five points off sixth-place Lincoln.

They’ve been the league’s entertainers, scoring 31 and conceding 27 in 15 games at an average of 3.86 per match. At home, Peterborough have accumulated 14 points from eight games and have picked up in recent weeks. Their last three games at home have seen them win 5-1, 4-1 and 6-1, picking up momentum ahead of a busy winter schedule.

Reading are in turmoil off the pitch and face an uncertain future. On the pitch, Ruben Selles has honed a hard-working, exuberant squad. At home, they have the second-best record with six wins from seven games. However, away from home, they have struggled, picking up just five points from seven games and conceding 17 in the process.

Wrexham v Exeter – Wrexham to win

EFL League One match at the Racecourse Ground, Wrexham
3:00pm

So much has been made of the ‘Hollywood’ aspect of Wrexham off the pitch that people seem to understate the achievements on the pitch in North-East Wales.

After back-to-back promotions, The Red Dragons find themselves third in League One. Phil Parkinson’s side boast the best home record in the league, having won six of their seven games, only failing to beat Huddersfield in a game that ended 0-0. The dominant way they win at home is encouraging, scoring at least two goals in four of those seven, conceding just four in the process – the fewest in the league.

Exeter have surprised many with their start to the season, sitting ninth in the league. Gary Caldwell’s team are well drilled, conceding the fewest goals in the league (10). However, their 14 goals scored is the fewest in the top 14 of the league, so the Grecians may struggle to penetrate a resilient Wrexham defence.

Despite their impressively low conceded total, Exeter are the biggest defensive overperformers in the league, conceding 1.39 xG per game but only 0.77 goals against. Caldwell has relied on talented shot-stopper Joe Whitworth to bail him out several times this season. He will need the same from the 20-year-old again on Saturday.
