The final games of yet another international break bring with them a tie with plenty at stake as Wales welcome Iceland to Cardiff. Craig Bellamy has begun life as Wales boss with a five game unbeaten run that has them sat second in their League B table with a slim chance of automatic promotion to the big time.
However, a loss will see them slip to 3rd and facing a relegation play-off to remain at this level. Iceland are aiming for consecutive victories on the road to leapfrog Wales into second place and will be hoping to start this game much stronger having found themselves 2-0 down after half an hour in the reverse fixture.
Sverrir Ingason to commit 1 or more fouls
With Wales drawing 16.2 fouls per game in the competition, much of our Bet Builder will focus on Icelandic infringements. The first of those legs is for Iceland defender Sverrir Ingason to commit at least one foul.
He’s committed four offences in just 270 minutes of Nations League action with three of those fouls coming against Wales. The Panathinaikos man will be tasked with containing Wales’ two most dangerous players in Brennan Johnson and Harry Wilson, who have drawn 3.25 fouls per 90 between them for Wales this season.
Johann Gudmundsson to commit 2 or more fouls
We’re also backing Johann Gudmundsson to commit two or more fouls, something he’s managed in three of his last four games, including the aforementioned clash between these sides. Having swapped Burnley for Saudi, the midfielder may be lacking in sharpness and with Sorba Thomas and Neco Williams down his side, he’s going to be kept busy. That pair have drawn a combined 5.07 fouls per 90 in the Nations League and so hopefully the clumsy Gudmundsson fancies getting stuck in.
Iceland over 1.5 cards
When we’re backing one side for fouls, it also makes sense to take their cards and so we’re also adding Iceland to have two or more cards in what could become a fiery affair. The Nordic side have seen card counts of three, three, two, two and two in their other five group games and with Wales opponents having collected 15 cards between them, we can expect more of the same in this game.
As mentioned earlier, there’s plenty of jeopardy in the game and so there’s also every chance we get some cards for time wasting if Iceland take the lead. Referee Antonio Nobre has averaged six cards per game in Portugal this season and so isn’t scared to get himself involved either.
Harry Wilson to have 1 or more shots on target
The final leg of our Bet Builder is for in form Harry Wilson to have at least one shot on target. The winger has banged in five goals across his last seven appearances for club and country and will be desperate to carry his team over the line.
For Wales he’s had six shots on target in his last four games with at least one in all four with two of those coming in a goalscoring start against these opponents. Iceland have conceded more shots than any other team in the group at 15.8 per game with 6.4 of those hitting the target and with Wilson on penalties too, there’s every chance he gets a free attempt from 12 yards to cash this bet for us.
