Scotland +1
Scotland need to win in Poland to preserve their hopes of playing in Nations League Group A in the next edition, while a two-goal success could give Steve Clarke’s side the opportunity to play in the quarter-finals.
Scotland’s performances have typically been better than their results—with the notable exception of the first half against Poland at Hampden, when they slipped 2-0 down. Thereafter, they bossed that game, and their second-half display in that match should give them the belief that they can beat a home side bereft of Robert Lewandowski.
Poland, after all, were hammered 5-1 in Portugal just a matter of days ago.
Over 2.5 goals
Poland’s Nations League games have been high-scoring affairs and because this should be played in the spirit of a cup tie – with the winner taking everything – there is the potential for this to be another thrilling affair.
The home side’s issue has been an inability to keep their opponents out. In four of their five games, they have conceded at least a couple of goals, with 14 conceded across these fixtures.
Scotland have scored in four of their five fixtures, and if they find the net in Warsaw, that will inevitably draw their opponents out, very probably making for an open game.
Over 3.5 Scotland corners
Clarke’s side will have to approach this match with a forward-thinking approach, which opens up the possibility of the Scots winning a higher corner count than they regularly do.
This was certainly the case against Croatia on Friday when a red card to their opponents drew Scotland forward and allowed them to pick up six corners in total.
The Scots also picked up half a dozen corners in Portugal, and with an increased focus on getting the ball to the wings, where Ben Doak and Andy Robertson provide the threat, Clarke’s side has a greater scope than before to win these situations.
Over 4.5 cards
With the lives of these two countries in the top tier of the Nations League on the line, it would be surprising if there was not a level of needle in this game that produced at least five cards, despite only three yellows being shown when they met at Hampden.
While some of these games can be played with a semi-competitive feel, this should have the atmosphere of a full-blown major international clash, and the consequence is that it should have the intensity of a big game.
These teams may only have shared 16 cards across five games in the Nations League, but expect this game with amplified tensions to be a different story.
Scott McTominay to score or assist
Scott McTominay is the only Scotland player to have contributed directly to more than one goal in the Nations League. The Napoli midfielder has developed into a talisman for the national team over the last 18 months.
Since March 2023, McTominay has scored ten international goals in his last 16 competitive international matches. While he was not on target against Croatia, he came closest for the Scots while the match was still 11 vs. 11.
He has already netted in Portugal during this campaign, and it would be just like the former Manchester United man to pop up with a big goal in this game.
